Comments (5)Ugh.. bummer on the dual voltage hair dryer and the CC hassles. I didn't have my beloved makeup on my trip OR my round brush. It was the things I used the morning of my departure that didnt make it to my luggage. I don't do a lot of primping-- but what I do do is apparently critical to my self image. I didnt feel like my best self any day we went out and about. Translation: I am more vain than I thought I was! Thanks for sharing your experience with the Bric's Bellagio! TJ Maxx and/or Marshalls has a number of pieces from the same line but in the cream and black colorway. I was tempted but I don't think I like the cream and black as much. Did you use the laptop pocket on this trip? I don't know that I would use it but curious if you think it is a good upgrade? Also thanks for sharing how well the Ella bag worked out. I have bought and returned an Ella bag twice. It is a little larger than I'd use regularly but I have a few trips coming up that I think it would be great for. Now to decide which of the many colors/patterns to get. I have a few months to think about it! Sorry to hear that you had issues with the new shoes/boots! The vionic boots worked for me right out of the box-- now I wasn't walking miles in them but I was walking in them! So glad you had a backup! I did wear my newly gifted Uggs a few days on my trip-- I had no issues but i am not sure Uggs count as "shoes" lol. I got my booster a little closer to my departure than I had planned (caught a stomach flu the day before my appt). I did get it 5 days before I left -- and I am glad to say no sickness on my trip! It did weigh on my mind on my 2 flights. I won't cut it so close for my next booster! I am excited to see your photos -- I think most cities are at their prettiest during the holidays!...See MoreMore travel advice:) California
Comments (36)We just got back from our CA trip and had the BEST time. Thanks to everyone for such great tips and suggestions! It was so helpful. We stayed at the Cliff House Inn for three nights, and the view did not disappoint! The hotel isn’t your usual updated ocean front hotel, but it was wonderful. We were literally steps from the ocean. I really enjoyed Ventura. We stayed in a cute little Airstream Trailer Park that was a lot of fun. And ate tacos every day😀 We went to Ojai for the day and lucked into the best Farmers Market. Managed a trip down the 1 through Malibu and Santa Monica on our way to the Getty. And had the best time in Palm Springs and Joshua Tree. Joshua Tree was small but so much more than I thought it would be. I would love to go back long enough to see the night skies there. The weather could not have been better and the food was truly outstanding. You all are so lucky to live close to such fresh ingredients. We went from ocean to mountains to desert and loved all of it! We also timed our drives to mostly avoid the traffic, so thanks for that info as well....See MoreIs anyone traveling to or going to watch the total solar eclipse
Comments (37)I don't remember the year, but the only eclipse I ever saw was in the spring, more than 25 years ago. Neither DH nor I were thinking about it, but an eclipse was already underway when we walked out of the shop in a garden center. It wasn't only dark, it got quite chilly, too. There was a hush -- birds and insects reacting, I suppose. It took my breath away, something I only realized when I began to breathe again as the sun was revealed. I was truly awed -- the more so for not having expected it....See MoreJapan travel recommendations please
Comments (12)Personally, I would not spend a ton of time in Tokyo. It is an enormous, bustling city and in that way very much like all world class cities. I may be biased because I have been there mostly on business, and only once for pleasure (with the family on the way to other Asian locales). There is some interesting shopping, whacky pop culture, great dining, and, if you like city views, it is Times Square on steroids. Do eat at a Shabu Shabu restaurant (this is now a favorite dinner in our house, after a family trip to Japan 10 years ago). If memory serves, @KSWL recc the restaurant to us! For business, I stayed at either the Park Hyatt (aka the “Lost in Translation” hotel), or the Four Seasons Maranouchi (near the Imperial Palace East Gardens and Tokyo Station). When we went as a family we also stayed at the Four Seasons, since it was familiar to me (and they provide an escort from the zoo that is Tokyo Station. BTW, no one takes a taxi to Tokyo from the airport. It takes forever and costs a fortune. Ask me how I know this.) Tokyo station is a crazy bustling place, 8 levels deep iIRC. From Tokyo, we took a day trip by train to Kamakura (easy to do) and met a guide there to tour and learn about Shinto shrines and the giant Buddha. I was in Kyoto over 25 years ago, before kids and before DH. I adored Kyoto. I loved the way you could meander down a street and come across a charming tea shop, an arched bridge, or jewel-like koi pond. So romantic and exotic. No doubt your research will include suggestions for the Temple of the Golden Pavilion and Ryoanji’s Zen rock garden … both forever etched in my memories. I never did get to go to Saihoji’s moss garden, and have regretted that (required advance reservations). You will definitely want to stay at a ryokan and sleep on a tatami mat and use a traditional japanese soaking tub . In Kyoto, I think Hiragiya is one of the most famous. I was so long ago so my recc may be out of date. On the show Somebody feed Phil they just did a Kyoto segment....See Morelucillle
