I like your room. I dont mind the color, although, appears a bit yellow in the pictures. I am not fond of the rug. I think a rug with a pattern and a bit of maybe the blue colors that are in your other picture, would look very nice. I do think black goes better in there than brown, but, if you are keeping the recliner in that room, then, maybe no black and no grays, use brown instead. The room would be much cozier if you also did some window treatments, and maybe have a bit of the blue in those too. Right now, its very bland.

Thanks for your comments. I should've noted that we're in a relatively new home so I have a ways to go with decorative touches. It took me awhile to finalize the bigger purchases first.

It might not be clear in the pictures, but the sectional is actually gray (color is called cement). I tend to like neutrals for bigger items and save color for smaller pieces and I'm afraid that a blue rug would be too much. Although, maybe with the right wall color it could work.

I would put color on the floor and get a vivid pattern rug. I am so tired of all those muted tones - boring. A rug is an easy way to add variety and pizazz to your room. It will be one of the least expensive items in the room and can be changed in a few years if you tire of it.

Thanks @Louise Smith for your suggestions. I'm not a fan of bright color rugs but I realize that others may have different tastes, especially on a forum like this. I'm planning on getting a 9x12 wool rug though, so not necessarily an inexpensive purchase. I'd like something that will last and would rather make changes with smaller accent pieces over time.

I think the couch needs to move back a little. The rug should be a bit larger. And maybe a darker neutral. Rectangle coffee table. And yes to new lighting. But lower it!! Please!! This space is really pretty. The bones of this home are rich, well built beautiful bones!! It’ll look so great so soon. I would also add some texture to the room with throw blankets. And as stated above throw pillows. Add some poufs. Maybe ottomans. You need softness in here.

Thanks! I plan to add a small ottoman and definitely throws. I debated whether to go larger with the rug. I left space behind the sofa on the wall without windows because I plan to put some sort of storage or console there.

This is how dark the rugs have to be to not show up like a 'shiney new penny'.

I especially like this first rug in your room though 9x12 is the largest size and that may not be large enough for your room.

I would prefer a rug large enough for the sectional to sit on entirely. It will anchor the room better if it has some interest, so I'd opt for some color to work with the sofa and subtle pattern. Then you can move on to selecting a paint color that works with your fabrics/textiles.
