Help! Switching the location of kitchen hardware.

I'm currently redoing my kitchen and we're getting close to the end and putting some of the finishing touches in. Our contractor recently installed the hardware for the kitchen cabinets (handles and knobs). When we came to the house to look at the work we noticed that he installed some of the hardware in incorrect locations (putting knobs where there should be handles and vice verca) and only put in one piece of hardware in a drawer when, due it's size, there should have been two. For example, in this picture, they installed one knob in 3-foot drawers:

When we spoke to the contractor about the incorrect placement of the hardware he told us that the holes have already been drilled so he won't be able to switch the locations of the hardware. Does anyone have any insight into this or know of a way to switch the location of hardware where the holes were already drilled into the cabinets?

"You can never fix a drilled hole with a touchup kit and not have it show."

Even then with some finishes you will never hide it, and you finish appears to me one of them. I guess there was no prior plan for the hardware placement?

I can't believe that he drilled into your cabinets without going through this detail with you!! My cabinet guy was very particular in asking location for knobs, pulls, doors vs drawers.

Thanks so much, ellenm08, for the link. There were so many different knobs and placements! I love, love, love the white cabinets with ORB and satin nickel hardware. Maybe someday. . . I'm a visual person too but I've never taken pictures of my kitchen because 1) I'm not overly fond of the cabinets (po remodeled before we bought the house) and 2) I usually have piles of kids' paperwork everywhere and dishes drying in the sink :-D So, I cleaned up the clutter and took these pictures. Looking at them online reminds me that I really need new barstools. DH got these years ago and I've been saying I'm going to replace them forever. Very uncomfortable and not my style! The plan is to switch out the appliances for ss within the next year or so.

What is your ceiling height? The concern with moving the recessed lights too far from the wall is that you will cast shadows onto the counters when standing in front of them trying to do prep work. It is less of an issue if you have high ceilings. Also, what size recessed fixtures will you use and what bulbs will you use in them? A 3 ft spacing does seem a bit close, if you happen to be using 6" fixtures. We are using the Cree CR6 LED bulbs (EcoSmart brand from Home Depot) in 6" fixtures and have a 4 ft spacing. We also have 9 ft ceilings. That provides a good amount of lighting for our kitchen. Unless you have ripped down your ceiling, you will need to be flexible. Once I started tearing into our ceiling, I had to revise our layout due to obstructions (joists, pipes, vents, braces, etc.). This post was edited by gpraceman on Sat, Aug 3, 13 at 14:37

Wow, thanks so much for the visual! This helps to see!! I agree the prep sink would help as far as having the fridge so far away from main sink if we move fridge to that back wall, but the island sink is actually something I don’t want. One of my must haves is the large uninterrupted island with gorgeous quartzite :-) Maybe it’s just a mental block I need to overcome. I agree with some that the 48” range might be overkill. Although without the fridge on that wall it helps! I am somewhat shocked to hear Hallet say it looks ridiculous though. I’ve seen a lot of ranges on Houzz and Pinterest with similar counters or less on either side. 3onthetree…The overall footprint of the kitchen/dining/living space is pretty much set in stone as this whole plan has had to be majorly revised a few times to cut square footage so we can even afford to build. However I am very happy with the overall layout, just trying to tweak this kitchen. The same house we almost built 5 years ago has now almost doubled in price so I’m trying to roll with the punches :-) As far as the other questions about how we function in the kitchen, I assure you this has been thought out. The pantry will include all small appliances so we can leave them out…toaster, air fryer, coffee/espresso (main resin for the sink), etc. Microwave will also be in pantry which is what we have in our current kitchen and I love. The two dishwashers will be fully utilized and a dream for me. We don’t generally unload during cooking so I’m not worried about the doors. We live in a rural area and cook almost every meal at home, plus bake a lot, so whichever range we choose will definitely be utilized. Everyday dishes will be mostly in uppers on sink wall. Pots and pans in deep drawers in island behind range. Although we haven’t gotten into full cabinet design yet so this is all up on the air. Our architect is wonderful but not an actual kitchen designer, she’s mainly happy to do what I ask. I have considered seeking out a kitchen designer but again, we live in a super rural area and that’s just not something that’s common or easily available here. Maybe I could find a good online consultation option.

Who would ever think a knob belongs on a big drawer like that?? I'd consider making him replace the drawer fronts that is a huge mistake if he did it on his own with no guidance from you.

While I agree that the knobs look too small, a smaller handle on a 36" width drawer reduces the liklihood that someone will be standing off center and pulling the drawer open, which can affect the drawers' balance, over time.

Looking at Houzz photos of large kitchen drawer hardware, there are many with one larger cup pull or one bar style. The easiest solution would be to find a cosmetically compatible pull that covers the drilled hole, but looks more substantial.

The style of your cabinets would pair nicely with an elongated style cup pull. I think this was a happy accident. Two knobs look cluttered to me.

The only thing I see wrong with it, is that the knobs are not large enough, and I dont think they look that good with the type of cabinets you chose.

If the contractor & client had previously agreed in hardware placement, but the contractor installed it wrong, it is customary for the contractor to fix his mistake at their expense.

Mistakes happen, how they are fixed is what matters

Here's some solutions to work out with your installer.

You are the client, so pick what you want.

Get new drawer fronts- redo

Many cabinet companies offer drawer door replacements for this type of install mistakes.

or

Get hardware that can cover mis-drill.

Cups

or

Get a backplate behind the pulls to cover the hole.

An experienced contractor who has had to eat the cost of new drawer fronts on a whole kitchen, will usually ask twice about the hardware placement and then make a template to be sure that the hardware goes in the exact spot that was agreed upon. All the contractors I have worked with must have made that mistake early on in their careers, never to be repeated again!

I would not accept what he did or new cabinets that are patched.

If you can find new drawer pulls handles that could work to cover up the contractors mistake that you like he should pay for them. If they are much more expensive then he should pay for them so don't limit yourself by costs to find some that could work. It would be less costly for your contractor than new drawer and door fronts along with the cost of labor.

The holes can be filled and painted; they will be fairly inconspicuous with the new hardware covering over the repairs and the fact that these aren't at eye level. Worth a shot.
