What do you always serve Christmas and Christmas Eve?
Comments (9)My husband's parents used to celebrate the English way, or what they thought was English (they're from Hong Kong). A full dinner at 6p on Christmas Eve, putting up the tree, opening presents at midnight, and then eating a full meal AGAIN at 2am in the morning Christmas Day! This really wasn't very enjoyable for me, and since my MIL worked it was pretty stressful for her, too, doing all that stuff! They would make roast leg of lamb (Chinese will eat meat in huge quantities if they can afford it!), shepherd's pie, several Macanese (Portugese recipes adapted from Macau cuisine) dishes, and one little lonely package of Green Giant creamed spinach for 8 people. Eventually over the years, they stopped doing these parties, due to ill health and just getting tired of all the work involved. I was secretly relieved, although my husband STILL misses opening presents on Xmas Eve, LOL! My family of third-generation Asian Americans, celebrates Christmas Day. We never have a set menu, as all of us, including my now-grown-up nephew and niece, are dynamite cooks and love to experiment. Although we do a mostly traditional Thanksgiving, Christmas is always different. Sometimes we do "theme" ethnic cooking; sometimes we do more traditional stuff. This year it's slow-roasted salmon and prime rib, because my nephew is anxious to try cooking his first Big Piece of Red Meat :)) I make a smoked salmon sushi appetizer that the family really likes, so I offered to do the hors d'oeuvres this time. My BIL is vegetarian so he'll do a Greek salad and we'll have a couple of desserts -- probably a tiramisu and a fresh strawberry tart with lemon curd filling. My sister is in charge of the starch this year, could be pretty wild as she approaches cooking as a science experiment! New Year's we celebrate individually. My sister and her family do a buffet drop-in. My husband and I usually make ourselves a nice festive brunch -- blueberry French Toast or Chocolate Pancakes, and then maybe rack of lamb or filet mignon for dinner....See MoreChristmas Family Drama
Comments (33)Magdalena, I totally see your point and I think it is entirely justified. I have been thinking about this post, though, because I have a slightly different view. If I were you, I would attend a holiday gathering at your Mom's house, with your sister and nephew and brother and whomever. I would try not to judge how your Mother or sister choose to deal with your brother -- they are struggling too. But I would hate to see this person (who has already caused so much destruction) damage your relationship with your Mom and sister. So I would not host him, but I would not shun a party he attends. I also would not force DH or anyone else to attend. I would go and try to make the best of it, try not to make it about him. You can't control and your are not responsible for your brother's drinking. He could "go to a bar get drunk then drive home and kill someone" any day of the week. It doesn't really relate to the holiday. You should still stick to your guns about blocking his number, etc., and you should. One, to protect your happiness. Two, because the kind of help he is seeking from your isn't what he really needs. He needs to decide to be sober and only then should you help --- if you want. Again, you are totally justified in handling it the way you want. I am just trying to think through what approach might make the most people the happiest in the end - including you....See MoreNeed help creating a Zoom ready office
Comments (16)In my view, the Zoom-ready part comes second. First you need to get the practical things right. There is little sense having something that looks great on camera, but is uncomfortable to work in. My number one priority would be a secure and reliable internet connection. Depending on where your router is and who else is hogging the bandwidth, that might mean ethernet or a powerline connection. Much depends on the type of work you do and how much you use the office. Given the current situation, I am assuming it is a full-time work from home office. That means you need enough desk space for whatever it is you do, possibly with a keyboard tray so that your hands are the right height. A proper adjustable office chair that supports your arms and back could be useful. Make sure your screens are at the right level, etc. There are good lighting tips above. Given that you are starting with an emptyish space, the background is the easy part. You can pretty much set it up how you want: art, books, memorabilia, etc. Experiment with different looks....See MoreZoom meeting decor
Comments (31)I use the blur feature as my office space is also in our master bedroom. Otherwise you'd see a wall and the side of a cabinet with a TV on top and a giant pink unicorn in the background on top of a cedar chest ;) Left over from my daughters younger days, but I'm not allowed to get rid of it yet. It's all good though as she is in that awkward in between of wanting to be grown, but also being a little girl, so sometimes it still gets snuggles....See More- 5 years ago
