How can I save my money tree?

About two weeks ago I noticed the tips of the leaves on my braided money tree were getting brown, some were getting crispy and falling off. It is about 40- 50 degrees right now where I live and I keep the tree near an east facing window where it receives a decent amount of sunlight. Recently it looked like two of the trunks completely dried out & upon doing some research I thought I had over watered it & now it had root rot. I removed the two trunks that were squishy and wrinkled & repotted the tree in fresh soil. Now I just want to know what my next steps should be in regards to saving the tree.

when you repotted.... did you moisten the media first.. or is it now bone dry???

its VERY stressed form overwatering.. and repotting ... and once you answer the question above.. there isnt much you can do further.. other than watch and see if it recovers.. while watering properly ...

it is stressed not hungry ... fert is not a response ...

and yes .. is might look ugly.. until it starts sprouting again ... and i wouldnt be surprised if all the damaged leaves eventually fall off ...

Just do a quick Google (I didn't know what a money tree was). They come from very wet environments, they don't like to be disturbed and they don't want any direct sunlight. That should give you some basics to strive for. This may well be a response to the repotting.

Elise, I agree with Jane..Sounds like you did a great job..but, if the stems your kitty-cat decided to use as a scratching post start wilting, badly, perhaps it's best to remove them..I'm unsure if these sections can be rerooted.. LOL, on the kitty took matters in his own paws..lolol..Toni

Steve: Wait a minute here, you purchased a serviceberry shrub at 12'? Does that mean 12 feet tall? Surely this cannot be so. That is the size of a middle-age serviceberry that has been in the ground for many years. What kind of a rootball would such a plant have? Surely too big to get in a wheelbarrow. If it really is as big as you say, that is a bit too large to be trying to transplant in the middle of the summer. If it is fully leafed out, it must be transpiring moisture very rapidly in the kind of heat we are experiencing now, and I don't see how the roots can keep up. You may be able to slow the transpiration by pruning it back severely, but I would say the prognosis is not good for a tree transplanted at this time of year. th102 now is not the ideal time to prune your tree. Having said that. It will still leaf out and produce fruit if you prune it now. The longer you wait the more sap will be flowing thought the tree and the tree will lose more of its energy due to losing more sap. Keep in mind that pruning while the tree is no longer dormant will be a shock to the tree. Thus it will likely appear to stop the active growing process for 1-3 weeks. Your fruiting and ripening cycle this season will also likely be delayed/slowed by roughly the same amount of time.

How tight are those hard rubber pieces of garden hose holding the tree in place? I'd use panty hose instead, if you feel the tree needs staking, .....and not so tight. The leaves are reacting to sudden sunlight where previously they were in the shade and if you don't drown it, or let it completely dry out, it should be OK with a new set of leaves coming out soon. Check the soil several inches deep around the rootball so you actually know what's going on rather than speculate. Mike

You are a lot more tolerant than I :-) Unless it had a strong emotional attachment, I would not bother with the time and effort involved in getting this plant into a healthy condition. Growth is very slow in winter and root rot is hard to come back from. And I do believe the appearance is due primarily to root rot, not the repotting. Just don't have room for ugly, half dead plants in my life :-)

FWIW, I grow an epiphyllum that is not an attractive plant. In fact, my sister seldom fails to comment on its appearance every time she visits. It produces long and lanky growth and forms odd looking protrusions. But that is just the nature of the plant itself and the flowers, when produced, make up for it. OTOH, the pachira should be very full and lush looking.

well.. of course ... this isnt a rare unique specimen ... tossing it out the window .. after checking below is always an option ...

if you like an experiment ... and are willing to watch it for a year while it TRIES to recover.. go for it ...

if space is limited.. and its going to stress you every time you look at it.. put it out of your misery ...

and then do a happy dance when you go buy another.. or something else ... that is easier to care for ...
