Oh, dear, the Internet Police are not going to arrest you. They have no power over you, Super Mother! Of course you can mix the colors you want. My friends are all kinds of different personalities, but they all mix into a wonderful party. I pick colors and things I like, get rid of things that don’t, and enjoy the experience. Otherwise, your home will look like everyone else’s homes. It is just a can of paint. If you aren’t crazy about it, repaint it. But pursue your vision. Find lots of pictures of the colors you find draw you. ( My walls are BM Capitol White, my trim is Prussian Blue, and my sofa is oatmeal)

Whites hardly ever match exactly, unless you use the same paint on your walls, trim, cabinets, and furniture. And even then, a color can look quite different in several locations depending on the lighting. The variety of shades make your room more interesting.

I also love what remodeling 1840 said about friends being different but when you combine them together, they make a great party! I read something similar about a good design plan once. They said it should be like a family; one that has members with different looks, personalities, and voices, but when they are together they become a cohesive group. Imagine a family where everyone looks and sounds alike....they would be dull and boring to hang out with. Or likewise, one that is so disjointed that they can't stand being together; you'd want to get away from them!

I try to remember that analogy when I find myself stressing over things not matching or being part of a "set". There's a place for all of that but it can be overdone.

The challenging thing is picking the right "white" as there are a million whites which include cool and warm tones and how your lighting, both natural and artificial and night affect it all. And what else will be in the room that have to be taken into consideration such as a rug. Do you have the sectional yet? And nope, you are not whining...tell your husband to rub your feet and you'll feel much better :) Congrats to both of you.

We just moved so the room is completely empty and all we have is the ivory sectional which should be coming in the next few weeks. I figured I had to pick out the paint before the rug so we are literally starting from scratch or else I would send a picture of what we have.

Usually paint is picked out last as it's easier since there are a million paint colors but not so much on all the other things. Are you trying to get the room painted prior to the sectional coming? If so, the best thing for you to do is start shopping for paint, get your chips and bring them home. Once you've narrowed it down to a few colors, get samples, paint a poster board in each color and move it around your room during different time of the day and night to see how it reacts to your natural and artificial lighting. And hopefully, you have a sample of the sectional fabric to help you choose while you wait for it's arrival.

Value - how light does it appear? Higher the Value, the lighter it is.

Chroma - how colourful is it? Lower the Chroma, the more neutral it is.

LRV - how much light does it reflect? Expressed as a quantity.

Pairing two whites together? Say trim & walls? Look for a difference in Chroma of at least 0.2 to ensure one does not look murky next to the other. A little difference in Hue Family location helps with contrast too.

I didn’t know the internet was an expert on color…. anyway, that is ridiculous. Of course ivory and white can be partners. but, that’s not your problem. The problem is to get the right white, The daylight controls whites. From what direction does the natural like come?
