Bathroom Vanity Tile - Do we need tile behind the toilet?
We have a small upstairs master, where we added a wet room. We are now tiling behind the vanity, which shares a wall with our toilet. We have read differing opinions about whether we should be tiling just behind the vanity or take the tile all the way down the wall behind the toilet.
To complicate matters more, we originally decided to go with a darker tile and a double herringbone deign to really pop. As you will also see we added an LED mirror in the room to add additional light, we will also have two wall sconces above the mirror.
What that brings us to is two questions:
1. Should we tile just above the vanity, or should we take the tile all the way to the end of the wall behind the toilet?
2. Is the herringbone design too busy, and should we instead go with a simple brick look or maybe a single herringbone look using the same tile?

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agoi would do that entire wall in tile. it's only another, what? 20"-24"?? not a big deal. keep it uniform and do the entire wall. find some nice shelves or art to hang over the toilet.
your double herringbone is fine. Paint the other walls a nice white.
(personally I would have done a lighter grout in your shower)

Comments (12)I can't give unbiased advice because it sounds like we are doing exactly what you are doing. I think it's a personal preference thing. We are tiling 12 inches above vanity top (to the bottom of the mirror) and doing the whole wall behind vanity and toilet right to shower which will be tiled in the same tile. This is how we had it before the reno and I liked having tile behind everything - for both ease of cleaning and the look of it. The sales guy from the tile shop said that most people weren't tiling whole bathroom walls these days, but I have a classic, old world aesthetic (not necessarily traditional) and his clientele is mostly the Mcmansion or new build owners. Comments (17)Sumod- The medicine cabinets are simple wood frames with a cabinet-grade plywood back that just sit in the stud cavity. Because of the dimensions, the front of the frame projects about 1"+ beyond the finished wall. The medicine cabinet doors are also plywood with veneered edges and they are attached to the frame with standard cabinet hinges (Euro hinges). The mirrors are just 1/4" plate glass ordered to size from a glass shop and held in place with mirror mastic and a metal strip at the bottom that you don't really see. The guy who did the cabinets just made the medicine cabinets as part of the job. I don't know about the door brand...we live in a large metro area that has lots of door shops and the doors are just solid core maple doors with the center cut out and a maple panel held in with molding. Comments (13)I had the exact same problem. I picked out the vanity I wanted but did not think about the fact that it wasn't made to sit flush against the wall. I spent a month looking for something else, but in the end we decided to go with something shorter and have it not be against the wall. But we were going from 72" to 60" which is probably not workable in your mom's situation. I did find a lot of vanities that did have flat sides and could work in a corner, if you are willing to have the countertop fabricated. They just need to not have any trim detail on the top or bottom like the one you picked out does. I would just look at the ones without the pre-made tops. Because the pre-made top will still leave you with a slight gap because of the countertop overhang. This is an example: Avanity Modero which is sold everywhere, not just at Lowe's. The cabinet we ended up buying is an Avanity Madison which won't work for you, but I assume it is of similar quality. We are pretty happy with it. The drawers and doors have soft close but I do feel like the glides in my Ikea kitchen drawers are better quality. It is very pretty and I wanted a stained wood so I am really happy with our choice. Comments (5)You can do a drawing on a piece of graph paper, no need to use sketchup. It sounds like you want to add cement backer board on top of existing drywall (plaster?). There is no need to do that. You can tile on top of what's there if it's structurally sound, or remove what's on the wall and put in new drywall and tile directly to that....See MoreLyndee Lee

yes, our toilet goes where the brown box lies. It is a tankless smart toilet.

3 years agolast modified: 3 years agojudianna20, it’s not a steam room. wet rooms are really popular for renos and new builds in Seattle. Maybe b/c we have small narrow lots, so not a lot of space for 5 piece bathrooms. here is a description of wet room from google
