Steve: Wait a minute here, you purchased a serviceberry shrub at 12'? Does that mean 12 feet tall? Surely this cannot be so. That is the size of a middle-age serviceberry that has been in the ground for many years. What kind of a rootball would such a plant have? Surely too big to get in a wheelbarrow. If it really is as big as you say, that is a bit too large to be trying to transplant in the middle of the summer. If it is fully leafed out, it must be transpiring moisture very rapidly in the kind of heat we are experiencing now, and I don't see how the roots can keep up. You may be able to slow the transpiration by pruning it back severely, but I would say the prognosis is not good for a tree transplanted at this time of year. These are generally easy potted palms, and can survive in the same pots for decades… but you need to have good soil, good drainage and good water (need to really soak the heck out potted palms every few months to leach out all the salts that build up in them)… I only recommend fertilizing potted palms 1-2x a year, and carefully. They do NOT do well when it freezes… how cold has it gotten in Corona? I don't think that's a particularly cold climate. Did you check the bottom of the pot of the dead palms to see if it was wet and gooey down there… or dry as a bone?

Silver or Freeman-hard to tell which, and of course, they are close relatives. The graft failure is an intriguing idea. I've seen such, but in the more well-known case of certain white ash cultivars. In any case, this plant could be cut back to live stems if one is patient. I could do it in just a few minutes. YMMV. The reason this is not so crazy an idea is that this tree will be very fast-growing. Even the little remnant, should you prune as suggested, will quickly shoot up and become a tree again. Why the die-back? Who knows? Sometimes it just happens, and of course, there is a cause, but we don't always know what it is.

No, no, no, pls Jaycee do not advise watering when you KNOW it has no roots. Besides, watering lightly is pointless & encourages bad watering practices. Haws are vulnerable to root rot under the best of conditions, do not water this at all if you want any chance of survival. Pot it up DRY, & leave it alone for at least 7 days w/out watering. Shake the plant off to knock off the extra cinnamon. I hope both the base of he plant & the cinnamon were ddry when applied. I would have left the lower roots on in a dry mix to protect the base of the plant from further rot & contact w/ moisture.
