What's the latest flooring color trend?

Hi all!

I'm renovating a 3-bedroom basement apartment. I don't keep up with the color trends. I'm planning to install laminate or plank vinyl flooring. I just talked to someone yesterday and they said gray is going out of style and light brown is in coming in style again?? What would you say the trend would be one year from now?

Also, based on the trending flooring color, what wall colors would you suggest? I feel like I can design a space for efficient use but I am "color blind" when it comes to design!!

The gray look is fading away.

The light oak look is trending up.

Medium brown is always classic, and you won't have to worry about anyone knowing whether you did the reno in 2017 or 2021.

Since you are "color blind", you should find someone to help you. That can be a friend who does it for fun or a pro. Just don't let them sell you on what they like -- be sure you like it too. Some friends have styles that you might like to look at for a few minutes, but not all day.

For a basement apartment, I’d be aiming for as light as possible Vs what is, or going to be popular in a year. Lucky for you, light floors are popular with a simple design and creamy white walls are a great choice. These choices should be good until you have to update again - lol

I was reminded by this thread of this Meryl Streep classic from The Devil Wears Prada: "This... 'stuff'? Oh... ok. I see, you think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don't know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis, it's actually cerulean. You're also blindly unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves St Laurent, wasn't it, who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic "casual corner" where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. Thank you. I want more color. I have the creamy now. Patricia any of the color families I mentiond would work based on cabinet, counters, furniture and flooring. Well, maybe not the blues since I'm more tropical than coastal (live in Florida). You're right....go with what I like, but I like golds, oranges, and greens. Didn't know if one or the other was more trendy or ready to flop more than the other

Late to the party, but I can see this happening when you have a property that is otherwise unremarkable and in dire need of renovation, and has locations/views. If it is not a historic home or does not have great inherent features, but is just in need of an entire renovation, I think it might be a benefit to the buyer to know that the walls have been opened up already so the risk of surprises in the wall during renovation are eliminated. The downside is that people often want to move walls and change layouts as well. It dawned on me that our last purchase was this way -- essentially it was a stripped down condo and bare when shown -- but they completed work to a required point (it may have been required there to process a sale). We were able to pick finishes and alter certain things before completion.

I would always recommend a solid drapery panel in a light, neutral color for a master bedroom. IMO the purpose of drapes in a bedroom is privacy and light control, and you want something that is only there to add a layer of "softness" and luxury and richness so you don't want any bold pattern that would disrupt the serene/sophisticated feeling you're going for. Patterns will make your eye look at the drapes, and that's not what you want to be focused on .... you want the drapes to "disappear" into the walls so that you get the feeling of them without being forced to acknowledge them.

Go ahead and google "European Oak" wood floors. You will get THOUSANDS of photo hits. This is the range that is super hot right now. It has been hot for 3-4 years and will likely stay hot for another 3 years.

When we say design trends, we are talking about the fashion LEADERS. They are LA and NYC. The further you get AWAY from these trend hot spots, the further you get from the 'heat' of hot trends.

Example. In the very depths of the Heartland, you will still see people putting in the dark grays that were hot 7 years ago. Some will have already moved to 'light gray'. Not many have run into the BLISTERING HOT trend of WHITE floors. That was a flash in the pan. It was over in Hong Kong before it started to rage in California.

It is entirely possible your area is in the 'luke warm' states which means light gray is just peaking in popularity. If that is the case, you can move forward with the look of European Oak (soft yellows with plenty of beige and silver). That will keep you 'on trend' for the next decade.

Unless you plan to continue to cahnge with every trend go a nice neutral and I garee in a basement probably a bit on the light side unless you have lots of light then can go darker. We have huge windows in our walkout and dark vinyl plank that looks like walnut.
