Hi everyone

Quick question regarding replacement install in drywall return. Right now our blinds are flush against our old windows, the old windows are 1999 vinyl. If our new vinyl windows are installed as replacement ( sheetrock to sheetrock), our blinds will have to be pulled inward. how much further will replacement windows with drywall return come inward? Contractor says 3/4”. Is that correct?

if we install will nail flange, wont the new windows still come in 3/4” beacuse all newer windows have a 3 1/4” jamb ?

please explain.

Nobody can comment on specifics without knowing the measurements of your current setup. What can be confirmed is that YES, with a replacement install (sits inside the sheetrock returns) the new window will sit further inward and therefore push your blinds in. An install with nail fin will NOT sit as far inward, but could still sit farther in than your current window IF those have a more narrow jamb depth than 3 1/4". On the plus side, the fact that your contractor is talking to you about this is very encouraging, many don't. He should be able to answer your questions in greater detail.

3/4" is in the normal range. You can usually still mount them to the head jamb by pre-drilling some new holes and getting them in there. They will usually stick a bit proud, but nothing much.

I prefer using foam around the perimeter of the window. That said, if the gap between the window and original frame is too narrow, foam will not fit so using just a sealant would suffice. Remember, your okna will have full foam wrap around the window to thwart air leakage. If you actually have weight pockets, only very old homes do, its totally acceptable to use fiberglass insulation due to the cavity being wide. You could use foam but its alot of extra foam and your installer will have to charge extra for that. Usually $20-25 per window extra. Regardless, the weight pocket should be insulated. From what I've been reading, the replacement shouldn't stump him. Basically, after taking out parts of the old window, the frame that it came in is still sitting in the space. There are variations after that. He can probably find on line installations instructions for whatever you ordered, so he can read up on it. There are also you tube videos which show many different types of installs. Something like you have should be in one of them. Unless your windows were rotting out, it's a lot better to do replacement instead of removing the entire orig frame which not only is a lot more work but a screw up could affect structural integrity. He's just feeling anxious because it's new to him and he's afraid he won't get it right. Oh, you asked about flush. Interior stops and sometimes outside stops come out, but I haven't seen the replacement seated flush with the interior wall. Maybe some do. Look at what you have now, where the tracks are. The stop goes back on top and sides, same place.

Good point, mmarse1 ...those three manufacturers keep coming up as the go to solution ...I'll get connected via their corporate folks. Given that my interior case moldings are all off (the house is a remodel and had paneling everywhere) and I have to remove the existing and waaaaay ugly storm windows and repaint anyway, it would seem like a full frame replacement strategy would make some sense - could I install full frames from inside and leave brick mold on - assuming no sill rot or damage? I was thinking about ordering and installing 6-10 windows at a time to deal with cash flow issues ...

There is an ancient paradox called the Ship of Theseus that asks if you have a wooden ship and everytime the ship returns from a voyage a number of the wooden planks are replaced. If you reach a point where all of the planks have been replaced, is it still the original ship? There is also a more modern version called Washington's Ax, that asks is an ax that once belonged to old George still his ax if the head and the handle have both been replaced over the years? So a question for Raye Smith since you are clearly a restoration advocate...if an older window during restoration needed a stile replaced, or a stile and a rail, or two stiles and a rail, or even both stiles and both rails...or perhaps what if 50% of an original rail and/or stile was repaired using wood putty, or what if it was 90% repaired using wood putty....when does restoration become replacement? If all four rails and stiles needed replacement with new wood during restoration, how would that differ from installing a new window as a possible option as millworkman suggested: If you had new windows made by a carpenter with individual divided lites and sash weights....?

If you use a nail flange, how far does the new window normall come in ?

i know a normal replacement is 3 1/4.

A new construction window application will not usually change the realized jamb depth.

It depends what the jamb depth of the existing window is as well as the measurement from backside of nail fin to inside face of frame. It could end up sitting in the exact same spot, or it could off. We can't tell without that info.
