I don't think you'll be able to change it without having it look like a craft project. It isn't that different in the black frame. Focus on the other elements in the room, and if you want to pull in some black, add a black tray or black vase to the table.

I bought a white ceramic cat and spray painted it black to use as a Halloween decoration. If spray paint is going to fail on anything, it's gloss ceramic, but the thing has held up for 10 years of (admittedly light) use. I think it will be fine unless you are particularly hard on your furniture.

Like Beverly said, spray paint it. I've spray painted hundreds of projects over the years. And use that exact paint that she has in her post.

IMO spray paint over chrome is a bad idea I like the chrome it works well and chrome is a much more expensive finish than black powder coat plus the fact all matchy everywhere is nover a nice look.

The responses are split between DO spray paint and DON'T. The coffee table was not cheap so I don't want to ruin it if I "mess up" but the black base really does make a difference in our space compared to the shiny chrome. I'm torn!!!

I spray paint tons of stuff but I’d be concerned with the legs getting banged by the vacuum and it chipping to chrome.

if you're worried at all, I say don't do it. this is an expensive table. I only spray paint older or cheap items, nothing that's truly nice. put it on FB marketplace and see if you can fetch a good price for it?

like Hallett said, the big concern here is chipping. other concerns include making a mistake while painting (drips, accidentally brushing up against it before fully cured, etc). and you need a clean, well ventilated protected space away from the wind so dust, bugs, etc, don't land on the wet paint.

I'd wait till all your new furniture is in place and then decide if you really need a black base or black accessories. If you find you want it black, I'd go to a resale shop and see if you can find something el-cheapo in a chrome finish and spray paint it to see how you like it. At least you'd get some practice spraying if you decide to go that route.

I would definitely wait until the furniture arrives and live with it a bit before you decide to make any changes to your coffee table. If you do decide you'd rather have the base black, I wonder if you could get it professionally powder coated for durability.

Add me to the Do Not Spray Paint This group. It’s a good-looking table, but if it doesn’t work in the room, I’d sell it and get one that does before using cheap spray paint on it.

If you use a matte black spray paint intended for metal it will work fine. I did my brass fireplace surround and it was gorgeous. You’d never guess it wasn’t original. If you’re nervous about painting it, take it to a powder coating shop!

Susan, the difference for your fireplace is that (presumably) nothing is bumping into it on a regular basis. What some of us here are worried about is a vacuum cleaner or other things chipping the coffee table.

I'm a bit confused. If you just ordered a new dining table with a chrome base, why do you want to spray paint the coffee table base?

You are likely looking at a price near the original price of the table for professional powder coating. Also, unless your item is one in very high demand, like a slip covered sofa, you will get but pennies on the dollar on a selling forum. Just paint it, be careful with the vacuum, and touch up as needed. But, like judianna, I wondered why you want to paint it when your dining set is chrome.

Hi deeinohio- Your experience using a powder coater may have been different than mine so I'll just mention that I've had multiple things done in the past and found it to be a less inexpensive way to go for what I had done than purchasing new. And it would have been even less expensive if I had gone with a color such as black that the powder coater used on a regular basis as they could have run it with another order. The hardest part for me was finding a shop that was willing to do a very small job. As with most things, always get quote and see if it makes sense.

I think the black legs on the dining chairs will be sufficient to inject black. It should be nice to repeat the chrome in dining and living areas. If you still feel you need more black in the living area, try the shag rug or black tray ideas, or add black pillows to your sofa. If you're in Chi-town, there should be plenty of high-end second hand shops. You might pick up a recycled black cashmere coat and use the fabric to make pillows. Get them embroidered with your last initial.

I would start by "creating" a black base...maybe some black fabric held in place with black electrical tape...just to make sure that the black truly is better and what you want, before moving on with painting/selling.

@tedbixby- yes, my experience was different. I was able to find someone who could only do small items. I guess there are different size units. To get a table done was several hundred dollars. I am in a smaller city.

I would not paint it. It’s a nice table. You could easily mess it up, it could turn out too thick and globby if not careful. I’ve spray painted many pieces and typically only repaint older pieces that need a refresh. You also mentioned that you just bought a new dining table with a chrome base? Keeping both tables with chrome bases will bring a nice consistency to your space.
