Hi -- thanks for all the suggestions. I wasn't able to get online to read them because I had to go out of town unexpectedly and didn't have access to the web. I've given up on the idea of using extra wide shower curtains. Amazon has some that would work, but they're too expensive for me ($67 dollars each plus $15 shipping so that's $150/year). So far, between mildew, hard water, and rusting grommets, I've never found shower curtains that last longer than a year, even with washing every 3 months or so. The heavy duty J.C. Penny liners that Golddust recommended look like a good alternative. I wish they sold them in their stores, though. I might try using 3 of the standard width ones. Ajasmama, you should be able to find extra long curtains very easily, just about everywhere I've looked for the extra wide curtains has extra long ones. P.S. For all of you folks thinking of replacing shower doors with curtains, think again. Shopping for new liners is a real hassle, even for the standard width ones. It's hard to comparison shop because the manufacturers almost never list the gauge of the vinyl (12 is best) and the quality seems to get worse every year. Last time, I bought two supposedly IDENTICAL curtains at Linens & Things, and one was 2" longer than the other. If I didn't have a clawfoot tub, I'd just install a door and be done with it.

@Ryan Thanks for the question. A concrete slab that is sitting ON the earth (ie. not in a high rise on the 10th floor) always requires a vapour barrier underneath. Always. If anything, it maintains your warranty. There are three definitions of slab concrete: 1. Below grade. This is normally poured concrete for a foundation that has been dug into the ground. Like a basement. Even if 1 square inch is 'below grade' we view it as ALL below grade. 2. At grade. This is a common situation. Concrete is poured onto the ground and the house is built from there...going up; not down. Again, this is sitting 'on the ground' therefore it is considered 'damp' until proven otherwise. Even in the desert areas, we find dampness in slabs that are sitting on the ground. Moisture LOVES to condense on cold surfaces...like concrete. 3. Above grade or 'suspended slab'. This is the 'high rise' situation. You don't have to be in a high rise. It just means the slab is suspended in the air. It touches nothing but air above it and below it. This is the ONE situation where you can 'get away' without a vapour barrier. But you still void the warranty as soon as the contractor starts laying the first run. The installer is responsible for installing product on-site. If you did not purchase the vapour barrier, then the installer did not install it. If you used the SHOP'S installer, then they are responsible for ensuring you purchase everything you need for the job. Which requires you to tell them what your situation is. You get what you pay for. A good flooring installer *should have pointed out you needed a vapour barrier. And then would have told you what to purchase for him/her, or they would have said, "I have some in my truck, it will cost another $1/sf for the materials plus $0.50/sf to lay it." Something like that. And the preparation of the concrete is another thing that should have been paid for and performed. But so many contractors just want a paying job, that they offer the 'no frills' install. They get there, they install what is needed/purchased/sitting out for them and then they go home with a pay cheque in hand. I've had experiences where my QUESTIONS to the homeowner caused them to hang up on me. Yep. The question, "Is this for a bathroom?" caused such angst they started to yell it was none of my d@mn business and hung up on me. OKee DOKee then. I don't know what your situation is. The above is just an example as to why a store, with highly trained FLOORING professionals (ahem...a flooring store and not a 'big box' store like HD) would miss something as simple as a vapour barrier for a concrete slab.

Beesneeds, I couldn’t agree more. Not the best choice. This pantry is part of a whole-house renovation and addition that has been going on for over three years since we closed on the property. I’m very grateful and happy with the (almost) end result, but the process has been insanely frustrating and aggravating, Murphy’s Law personified. Just to give you one small example, the great room ceiling was designed with six matching beams, and recessed lighting planned to be centered between some of them. One day, after the dry wall was up, the builder called and asked me to meet him onsite. He had mocked up what the beams would look like if the two end beams were twice as wide as the center four, and he explained that this was the only way the cans would be centered as intended. I pushed back, saying I didn’t like the look of the two fat end beams, at all, and asking what would be involved in moving the junction boxes so the lights could be centered between matching beams, as drawn. He got angry at me and told me the whole ceiling would have to be ripped apart and that it could NOT have been done right initially because of “existing conditions” since this is a renovation rather than a new build. I was flustered in the moment, surprised by his defensiveness and so it didn’t occur to me until later that night that the ENTIRE ceiling and roof in that particular room was brand new. I called our architect who tactfully provided confirmation that I was being bullshitted. So the builder had messed up, not framed the ceiling properly for the design, and was trying to convince me it was unavoidable rather than fix his mistake at his expense. That was the last time I trusted anything he said but unfortunately only the beginning of his pattern.
