uncommon plants in the valley..
Comments (28)Marymcp- Thanks! As far as the shade goes, those plants are barley getting any. They are starting to get burnt tips, but they are still alive and going strong. If you find yourself getting more babies off your spider plants than you have room for inside(like me), it's at least worth a shot outside. Those mesquite trees sound like they are going to be a great addition to your garden. Grant- Thanks alot, I really appreciate the specifics and solid advide/observations you provide. How about your Jades? What kind of watering schedule do they get? My large jade that was frying in the sun has recovered nicely inside and is now sprouting new leaves;)...See Morelily from the valley of the jolly green giant?
Comments (7)Thanks for the info (and the nice compliment). I have a few of these lilies scattered in my yard and they scent is pretty amazing. Cutting on "bunch" of flowers usually is enough to scent a house for a few days so I really want to treat them right. Should I side dress a bit of "bulb boost" after the blooms fade?...See Moredwarf lilies?
Comments (7)I have used both Mona Lisa and Garden Party. I bought mine as a mix of four varieties in 2002 from Van Bourgondien, which has a lot of bad reviews on the Watchdog. For these, however, they were just fine, at least back then. I only used them as annuals in pots, but everything bloomed beautifully. Of the 4 orientals my favorite was Mr. Sam (the 4th was Mr Ed - no not the horse). Mr. Sam is quite short, maybe a foot tall with a nice clear pink color with darker dots and white edges. It is very good for pot culture because all the blooms seem to face out. Mona Lisa is very similar but with more white in the center. Garden Party white with yellow. Mr. Ed was a white according to my bulb spreadsheet, but I honestly can't remember it at all. The asiatics on the Lily Nook site that Alina 1 suggested look really great! I have never tried the Lily Nook, but if they checkout on the Watchdog I may try some myself. I wasn't going to buy anything more this season, but they look so nice & you're posting reminded me how much I enjoyed the small ones &... the we're all such enablers here on the Garden forums :~) so why don't we both buy some....See MoreNot true love but False Lily of the Valley
Comments (1)I have a small patch in my woodland gardens in the backyard where little else grows due to large fir trees and acidic soil. It doesn't spread much there. Possible ideas to help you: dig a trench & install edging hand remove as much of it as you can out of the lawn before it goes dormant in summer layer over lawn with cardboard, compost & replant in Sept (I'm not sure if that will prevent it from emerging back through the cardboard in spring when decomposed. When removing try to get the root. Use a strong tool to help you: screwdriver, weeder tool with a little fork on the end, metal trowel. I have a diggit tool that really grips the roots when prying them out, so is worth the $. Here is a link that might be useful: diggit tools...See Morej k
