duraseal stain + bona traffic hd

Has anyone used this combination before? Does the bona seal in and cure the duraseal stain? Does it smell badly for many weeks after it’s done? I’m worried about exposing my family to the fumes. We intend to leave the house for around 4 days while the stain is being applied and the bona drying. Thanks!

We use that combination all the time without issue. The stain smells a bit but it dissipates quickly. Normal people generally don't have any issue with the faint odor from the waterborne urethane.

I will add to what Timothy says. These stains can have LONG cure times. Some of them cure between 24-72 hours. That adds another 2-4 DAYS onto the refinish.

And Bona Traffic HD MUST HAVE 5 days to achieve 99% cure. That is one day LONGER than what you have accounted for.

Depending on the size of the refinish, your time line *might* look like this:

*Assuming 1000sf of wood flooring:

Day 1: Sanding with 2 passes; possibly three passes

Day 2: Stain with ONE coat

Day 3-5: Allow stain to cure (worst case scenario)

Day 6: Apply coats 1 & 2 of Bona HD

Day 7: Abrade and apply 3rd coat of Bona HD

Day 8-12: Allow HD to cure

Day 13: Move hard furniture back into the space.

Day 43: (one month later) Add area rugs is *possible but not recommended

Month 6: Area rugs are 100% allowed onto the floor

Most wood professionals recommend area rugs be left out of the decor for 6 months. This allows any colour changes of the wood to be as even as possible (most wood fades...but some get darker).

I am of the firm belief your 'move out' time line is too short. Remember: winter time is a time where floors take longer to cure. Even with all the windows open AND the heat PUMPING for 5 - 12 days, it can still take the LONGEST time frame for the floor to fully cure...not the shortest.

In my experience, standard oil-modified polyurethane wears better, and it certainly costs a lot less. The downsides are slow drying, smell and ambering. As much as I like oil poly, I feel Weathered Oak would turn yellow over time if you use it. We used to recoat a salon floor regularly. At a seminar I asked an expert if he had any recommendations for a finish that would wear better than Traffic. He recommended oil poly and said it wears better than any of the top shelf waterborne urethanes, even the one his company sold. Unfortunately the salon was in a residence hotel and we could use it due to the odor. Depending on your wear and tear, Mega HD Clear might be a viable option for you. It costs about $50/gallon less than Traffic.

Y123,,I had to research it, but yes! Crayons make an excellent filler for small gouges or holes in resilient flooring. Select a colour that closely matches the floor. Melt the crayon in the microwave on medium power over a piece of greaseproof paper, until you have a pliant glob of colour. With a plastic or putty knife, fill the hole. https://www.woodshopnews.com/columns-blogs/filling-voids-knots-and-dents For smaller voids like thin cracks and pinhole knots, wax is great way to go. Wax comes in a variety of colors and a few hardnesses. For very small voids no larger than 1/16”, I like to use rub-in blending sticks. In a pinch, crayons will work. Simply rub it in or use a heat gun to melt the wax and drip it into the void. After it hardens in a few seconds, remove the surrounding smear by rubbing the wax flush with a hard block of wood wrapped in a cotton rag and a few drops of mineral spirits. I believe you can mix a little wood stain into wax and make your own color. you don't have to use a crayon (unless you have the exact color crayon!)

Red Oak Flooring - want to refinish with only Bona Traffic HD

Hi everyone! We are doing a full home renovation and have red oak floors on one floor of the house and white oak on the other floor. We are trying to get the floors to look as close in color as possible. I’ve seen a few threads and articles about using Bona Nordic Seal, Traffic HD Poly, and some mention using a country white stain (I think duraseal makes country white, and Bona just makes a “white”)- did any of you have the issue of two different woods and if so, did you do the same number of coats/combination of seals and stains on both floors? Or did you stain the red oak to dull the pink while leaving the white oak natural? We are going to sample some of the combos in the house to see before we decide but wanted to see what worked for others. Thank you!

Julia I'm having the same issue and it's not just the grain of the wood. There is something on the wood floor and I am not sure what it is, it's coming off for the most part. I'm using magic eraser, Murphy's and elbow grease, although some of it isn't going to come out unless it's sanded out. My guess is the previous tenants had kids and carpet and I would hate to see what the carpet looked like when it was pulled up.
