Any layout advice for total remodel of long weird kitchen?
Comments (31)Wow ... thanks for getting the gears turning. With the early layouts (island including, storage along wall opposite sink/refrig/etc), would it be possible to stick a single oven/mw stack in at the end (toward the window)-- how close to the window could that go? (And yes, if we switch the eating and cooking sections, we would have to build out the wall to increase the 21" section, I agree.) Another thought ... what about taking a table out of the kitchen entirely, enlarging the island to include seating, and leaving the wall for "tall storage" empty. Then putting storage (maybe a corner walk-in pantry) and other miscellaneous (coffee bar, wine cooler) down in the corner where the mocked-up banquette is? I'll have to figure out how to draw all this on the computer now ... it's my understanding that there aren't a lot of kitchen design software choices for a Mac? I guess I'll try the Drawing component....See MoreChanging HOUZZ page appearance
Comments (45)Well, I did figure out how to edit the styles on the tablet in Firefox, which will make things a lot easier for testing. You just enter this into the address field, replacing the id number to one that corresponds with your style about:stylish-edit?id=1 It takes a little trial and error to find the right number to enter since it looks like each style gets a number when it is installed, but I don't think it re-uses numbers after you uninstall one. So just keep counting up the numbers until you find the right style. Numbers for uninstalled styles just come up blank. If you can use a separate keyboard with the tablet it would make it easier, but using the built-in one works. I couldn't scroll down all the way for some reason in the edit box, but I have the free "hacker's keyboard" installed from Google Play store which has directional arrows for moving the cursor and that worked great. I'm hoping when I am done I can just copy the code and paste it into the userstyles site right from the tablet. The only thing I have found so far that works for the tablet in portrait mode is to set all the fonts to same fixed pixel size and a large one...30 pixels. When I use a smaller fixed font size the tablet screen defaults to a zoomed out look with tiny fonts and lots of blank space. If I try applying a larger % font size to everything it makes all the headers and stuff so big that it is un-useable. The regular style seems to look ok in landscape mode, even with the column layout boxes on the sides. Going to fiddle some more....See MoreSiding for a curved exterior wall (true bow window with walkout)
Comments (38)cpartist Thanks for your input. Everything is already framed and I like the layout. I bought this house knowing I would renovate and had several goals - all met with this design. 1. I saw at least 50 plans drawn with the kitchen in different locations including suggested by architects and designers on here. (not exaggerating about the number of plans - there were 3 different architects at different points and you can see all the suggestions offered on Houzz). The current location is the best compromise of location and cost without extending the house. It's 7 feet to the DR from the kitchen - I can live with that. 2. I am a bather so I want a tub in the master. There will be a linen closet in the master as well as several recessed cabinets not shown on the plan. I prefer pedestal sink to vanities as I don't like the sprawl of stuff on top of the vanity. There is not enough room in the guest bath for a bathtub - it can only be 5 feet deep without affecting the entrance to the DR. We can't change the location of the guest bath either as all the windows are already here. It could have been a little bigger if I was willing to put the laundry inside of it but I didn't want to do that. I went around and around on the guest bath with tub. In the end I decided against it for several reasons - 1. Many of my frequent guests have mobility issues that make climbing over a tub to take a shower difficult. 2. I don't have any guests who would take a bath when visiting so it seemed like another compromise I would pay for to make future buyers happy. I have a second home with a bathtub/shower combo and nobody has ever used the tub. Who knows what future buyers will want when I go to sell - if I were looking again, I would want a tub in master not guest. Maybe a family would want something different. Conventional wisdom would say people want at least 2 baths; however, I live in a city neighborhood with all old homes and most of the homes in my neighborhood, including the 4+ bedrooms, have 1.5 baths and they sell quickly. My master bath was and is on the larger side for the neighborhood. My house now has 2 baths on the main floor plus a 3/4 bath in the basement that we updated to use during the renovation. My house also has a full height second floor walk up attic so there is room to grow without adding on. I didn't expand up as I didn't want a two story home. 3. One of the goals of the project was to eliminate the narrow hall that couldn't accommodate moving furniture, a person with a walker, and the outswing doors to the basement and attic. I don't think the hallway can be narrower without looking weird or blocking doors. The new closet in the master is the second master closet - the other one is large. This is looking at the master from the new guest bath - if we were to extend the wall with the closet, I think it would crowd the bedroom doors....See Moreimproving appearance of this house
Comments (28)I LIKE the last one of the three options -- simple colors, gray roof. Really, it's a nice looking house. Sure it could be tweaked, but overall it's perfectly fine. Personally I even like those short, high windows --- they are interesting. Add some more trees and it will be great. I assume the whole development avoids the horrid McMansion look -- that's good. And you are 100% right to not take on the burden of building your own custom house until you have time and funds to devote to getting all the details attended to. Enjoy your new home! PS when you're ready to landscape, maybe a pic of the actual house plus general location or planting zone will allow some of the pro's to chime in with specific recommendations....See Moreemilyam819
