Neet help on 12' granite overhang support on kitchen island
Comments (13)I know this is not going to help the original questioner posted in 2007 and I sure wish I had found this question back then... But for those of you looking for "THE" answer... hear you go. The Amastin Company, Corryton TN, has been providing steel support bars in supporting hard surface counters to the East TN market since 1995. In this particular case, which is a common one, Amastin offers a 31" long x 2-1/2" wide x 1/2" thick steel support bar that would bump and mount into the back of the front face frame, notch and recess flush across the back cabinet mounting strip. This support would overhang 8" leaving it approx 4" from the counter edge making it virtually hidden. Amastin has the overhang support thing figured out and if you have any questions or in need of custom support advise... Amastin is place to find the answers. Comments (41)Before we remodel we struggled w/ this issue. In the end we made a bigger investment so that we could eat at a table & have an island. I am very glad we did. I almost always choose to have our family dinner at the table-- it seems so much more civilized and relaxed and an improtant time for our family of four to be/dine together -- which is only 3-4 times a week. When we sit at the table there have been so many improtant discussions that take place. They are critcal teaching moments for our teenage children. Also I am a stickler for table manners & it is hard to do that the island. Lunch & Breakfast happens at the island. FYI- We increased the kitchen floor plan byremoving diningroom wall & absorbing that space into our kichen plan. The dining room furniture then moved to share space with our oversized living room. Two years later- I am sooo happy we did this....See MoreKitchen island granite overhang support
Comments (6)Similar thread recently. Joe posted pics of installing corbels into a cabinet. http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/3549316/quartzite-peninsula-overhang?n=11 For overhangs you need to have corbels built into the cabinet or support brackets. That far of an overhang I would recommend corbels built into the cabinet. Might even need support legs honestly. You need to be confident there is no movement, if they do corbels and it still wiggles a little due to the distance, then do support legs also. Remember your considering this a table... tables usually have legs. Keep that in mind....See MoreWhich of these two kitchen layouts do you prefer?
Comments (42)"The only issue that we are unsure on, is what to do with the microwave and toaster oven in this layout. We use both a lot." Would your budget stretch to a MW drawer? If so, put it in the island at the end closest to the range. That leaves the drawers across from the DW and fridge free for dishes, silverware and possibly glassware. Or you could design a cubby for a small counter top MW in the pantry cabs, either behind doors or on an open shelf. The GE Spacemaker II MW is designed to fit in a standard upper cabinet so it would fit, no problem in your shallow pantry cabs. We use our toaster oven a lot, too. It was our only oven for 2 years after our oven died and couldn't be repaired (too old). We thought we'd get rid of it after the remodel but we decided to keep it. So glad we did! We designed a cubby for it. It works really well for us but we dud add an automatic fan behind it (like the ones used in stereo cabs to cool off components) to blow hot air out of the cubby and protect our cabinets. If I were to do it again, I probably would make the cubby height 18" not the 15" we did to help with air circulation. Here's mine: You could do something similar on your pantry wall. Here's another example: You could also place it on a pull-out shelf in your pantry. Here's an example of MW and toaster oven in a tall pantry cabinet. How large is your toaster oven? Our cubby is 19" deep with counter, which gives us room behind it and in front. We don't really need room behind it, per mfg specs, just room on each side of it and above. HTH!...See MoreD S
