Other Design Dilemma Kitchens

Help! want to expand kitchen into dining room need ideas :)

Just bought this house and I know I will never use the dining room - I would love to expand the kitchen into it but not sure how a long kitchen would look. Alos I would remove the tiny end piece near the sink to open that up a bit. Perhaps a long island in the middle? Thank you for any suggetions!

Are you looking to completely take over the dining room or just borrow some space?

Congratulations on your new home! to get the best help you need to post an overhead plan with measurements. Be sure to include length of all walls, windows, doors, and list anything that can't be changed--plumbing, utility chases, etc. Can the windows in the bay be raised? If not, I can't imagine another use for that area except a table. Is that a framed pantry in the kitchen? Can it be removed?

Keep in mind that the color will look different if it is sampled on a painted wall. You should be able to mix colors and have it color matched--although depending on the skill of the salesperson, the match may not be perfect. We have done colors at 50%--I think that also depends on the salesperson as to how they do it. For us, we had SW softer tan mixed at 50% and it was just lighter than the original shade. I had sooooo many paint samples up--I did large portions of the wall in the samples--but having the samples side by side and doing them on top of our existing yellow walls really affected how the color looked and made it hard to judge how the end result would look. I ended up picking my favorite and painting as much of the wall as the sample allowed to get the best idea of how it would look. The svelte sage and grassland were definitely way too gray in my house. If you do a search, there have been other posts on greens--I know it was helpful when I was trying pick a green. I think I even had a thread and someone suggested a nice Behr color or maybe a lowe's color--it didn't work in my space as I needed to coordinate it with a tan adjoining wall--but it was nice--I just can't remember the color.

The plan separates each living space with access from a central hall. It would work well for an office building but not so much for a house especially f you plan to entertain. I find that trying to make a good plan out of a bad one is usually a waste of time and effort. Its like renovating a house that hasn't been built yet. Decide what you think an entertainment space should look like and develop the house around it. But I would not design a house around an occasional use. The interrelationships of family members should be the dominant theme of a house. And I would never put a level change in a living space unless there was an alternate wheelchair route. If you plan to entertain, the front door should have wheelchair access too. An accessible half bath would be good too.

How are the bedrooms distributed in your neighborhood. How does a basement bedroom count in your area. Is it worth as much as a non-basement bedroom. How many bedrooms in your area would the typical buyer want above grade? Think about how these would affect your home if you are trying to sell. You don't want to make your home less desirable. I personally would want all 3 bedrooms on the same floor unless I had only one child or a young child and a much older child where maybe the basement bedroom would be acceptable. What are other options surrounding the kitchen for expanding?

I guess I should have mentioned there's a fireplace on the all brick wall of the living room on the far side of the living room, and the current entrance has a partial (3/4 height) wall/bookcase to separate it from the family room.

Where do you plan to eat your sit-down meals? Is there a Nook space somewhere else? I'd rather have a Dining Room than a Nook.

We need to see more. Please see the "Featured Answer" in the "New to Kitchens? Read Me First!" thread. We need:

(1) a fully-measured layout of all spaces affected (Kitchen, current Dining Room, whatever is on the other side of the peninsula),

(2) a sketch of the entire floor, and

(3) answers to a few questions

By opening up that wall, you will not gain but so much of kitchen space on that outside wall due to the bay windows. How much space is from the floor to under window sill?

Plus the different floors will have to be addressed. The stove would have to move, probably to where the current short peninsula is. Not saying it is not possible, just saying it will be costly. It's hard to tell how much space it truly is, especially with the wide lens effect. Suggest posting dimensions of the living room, kitchen, & dining room to get better,relevant feedback :)
