it's been a month--we are socially distancing and I feel fine. I don't think it's Covid--been no where to get it and when son drops off food we are all masked. I'll be tested Tuesday if I keep my doctor's apt. I don't think I lost my taste it was the heavy salty taste in my mouth that did it.

For sure - keep your appt. If it's nothing, then it's nothing, BUT it's obviously something and you need to know.

Keep your appointment. I have "phantom smells" occasionally - I smell cigarette smoke randomly when there is no reason to smell it, sometimes for moments and sometimes for long periods of time. Went to my neurologist b/c I have chiari malformation and was concerned. The neuro says it looks like small seizures deep in my brain. Nothing he's concerned about, but it helped me to at least have an explanation.

Meanwhile, drink lots of water. A salty mouth can be a sign of dehydration.

I have been drinking lots of water for weeks now. I guess I will keep my appointment even if it's gone. Probably won't be though.

sal, could you have lab work before you see doctor. At my age, they are doing all virtual visits with the stipulation that I have labs first and doc will know if anything irregular. Labs normally in our area take 24 hours. We have medical school here and they will take my labs in drive thru so we older folks don’t go in hospital. Would this be an option for you to have labs first? Your doctor would have to order the test in advance. May keep you from going for 2 visits.

Do you have teeth or sinus issues?

My first thought was to wonder if you might have biofilm in your mouth. I started having this problem a little over a year ago. It comes and goes, and sometimes it is very hard to get under control. I would not describe the taste as salty, but it does inhibit my ability to taste food. I'm not sure quite how I would describe the taste though. When it gets bad, a very thorough flossing and brushing (including tongue scraping) and a brief mouth rinse with peroxide makes quite a bit of difference. You might be able to see evidence on the surface of your tongue. My issues are usually most noticeable on the back edges of my tongue.

My doctors always have us go at least a week prior to our appointment and have our blood work done so they have the results to discuss with us.

Definitely keep the appointment but I would recommend blood work.

If ALL you taste is salt...you've lost the other 4 tastes we humans have . You said you can taste a little "sweet", so your sense of taste is coming back. That's GOOD! Hoping for a good outcome.

Have you considered your diet? Eating frozen meals? Have you reviewed the sodium content?

You post a lot, but to me, you ask too many questions, vs doing you own research. Do you read books, magazines? You generate a lot of traffic...but the signal to noise ratio....

I like the questions. Personal research may be done at times, but I like opinions from others.

I think the purpose of a forum is to ask questions of others. If I do not want to read the question or help with an answer, I have a scroll function on my computer....and I know how to use it.

Jim Mat, if you've been here a while, I think you'd have seen that many of sal's "questions" are meant as conversation starters, nothing more. I appreciate that, because I don't start many discussions so if the forum depended upon people like me ... well, it'd be awful quiet.

@User, you might be in the wrong section. This is The Kitchen Table where people converse, post pictures of the day, post jokes of the day, etc. There are other areas that are more focused on Home Improvement.

Jim Mat there are lots and lots of sites on Houzz that are specifically devoted to the style that you are looking for.

Kitchen table is so named because it is a conversation site. There are a couple of such sites here on Houzz. We ask one another mostly non home repairs Etc related questions; we enjoy one another's answers. If you don't like that style that's perfectly within your right but we the participants here do so therefore we will continue along happily with Sal. This is a group of people sitting around the kitchen table virtually and maybe metaphorically speaking.

Sal I just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed and do enjoy your method of engaging us. That's all carry on. :-)

I do not recall KT ever being a Home Improvement site. It is a mixture of different ideas on many different topics by a group of participants who are cyber friends. Some are very old members and some are newer.

Sal don't stop asking questions! Jim just misunderstood what kind of a site this was! I'm sure others will chime in to tell you how much we enjoy it.

Keep posting. I do the same thing on peony sites when things become dull. It is amazing how many good ideas have come from simple questions that start with "How do" or "Have you seen".

The OP has asked for frozen food recommendations, frozen dinners are often high in sodium. Perhaps the OP has recently consumed too many TV dinners.

Where is Elmer? He surely must have opinions on salty mouths and on posting too many questions.

Gee, Jim, I did a page search for “frozen” and your posts are the only ones mentioning the word “frozen.” I don’t see where the OP asked for frozen food recommendations.

Sal, please continue posting. There is this really cool feature that some folks haven't learned about - one can actually skip anything, any topic, any question. It isn't necessary to comment if you don't have anything pertinent to say. We all have bad days, maybe that's all it is.

Jim I don't think it is TV dinners that would cause one to have a salty mouth taste for a month . It might contribute but I think if a person continues to have that there's more beneath that surface. Particularly as Sal has said that there are no other flavor tastes that she or he is tasting. Sal is having that checked out so hopefully will soon have the answer needed for that to be reversed.
