The 2 are very similar, except the Slipper Elm's leaves are almost the same as American Elm, but are much scratchier due to high silica content in the leaf.

You should get into the habit of crushing or rubbing a leaf every time you collect data about an unknown plant. Some plants are not that friendly to skin so take care there. And some rather innocuous seeming plants can make you pay -- I can't tell you how many "killer" parsnip clan posts I've seen go through my facebook feed over the last month or two. But taking a smell is always a good suggestion as there are many plants with a scent.
