Concrete Countertops - Good or Bad ??
Comments (12)We are total DIYer;s and are just finishing our final two slabs in a huge kitchen. They are beautiful, durable, inexensive (if you do them yourself) and look like nobody elses!!! We knew nothing when we started and now consider ourselves pretty experienced. I'm so glad we did his but I don't think I would want to do it again-it is alot of work if you want it right but very gratifying. The best thing you can do is take Cheng's book out from the library and read it cover to cover. Then get allthe equipment you will need-rent or purchase a cement mixer, buy a variable speed wet grinder and all the diamond pads (Tool City is cheap). We found a used pencil vibrator but a sawzle (without the blade) or an orbita sander works well. DON'T cast in place-build the moulds with melamine and pour on a LEVEL surface (we built a plywood platform). Do use rebar and mesh, Quickcrete (flowcrete here in Canada), integral pigment purchased locally at a cement supplier (much cheaper, use acrylic rather than water when you "slurry" and if you want a harder than nails penetrating sealer there is a new product in the states that we used and it's fabulous. Hve I turned you off yet LOL!! Seriously though it is worth the effort and once you've raed Chengs book and watched his video you will see that it's not that complicated. You must be patient and be a bi of a perfectionist if you want a professional finish but it is certainly doable. I haven't updated for a long time but there is a thread I started called "bought the cement mixer" over at ikeafans. Ther's lots of pics, ideas, recommendations. Good luck-go for it....See MoreHow bad an idea is a pine table?
Comments (10)Positano Our bottom cabinets are in. Island will be assembled on Monday, Granite template on Tuesday. Builder back on Wednesday to finish installing uppers, trim, toe kicks, pulls, etc and granite installed on Friday. Love the look of our cabinets. Our trim around doors and windows will remain white (at least for now). Our new kitchen is in a completely new space from our old one so we already have trim up around doors, and windows. I guess I will wait and see just how much it bothers me. As for the table I think I have another solution (although I love the look of the ballard table - can't figure out why they would make it pine). Found the table I want at an unfinished furniture store for 1/2 the price of the ballard in rubber wood which is supposed to be very hard. Size is too long by 6 inches and they are going to remove it from the base, cut it to the right size, sand and re-attach to the base. I really don't have much wiggle room on the table b/c of doors and the banquette that will be built. You will see in the pictures. I will try and post som Monday after the Island is built. Can you go to a few showrooms to look at some cabinets and see if you can find a cherry you like or if the creamy white shaker is still calling to you. Good luck....See MoreAntique/vintage dining table - any idea when it was made?
Comments (14)Good heavens!...Don't wash any nice furniture with vinegar water! Pledge doesn't "build up". If it has been polished with the old formula pledge, which contained silicone, the silicone bonds with the finish and makes it repel water....as well as repel any subsequent finish you might apply. And short of removing all the finish and sanding the wood ( not good for a veneered top!) there is no way to remedy it. I am guessing the table has been refinished and the top coated with polyurethane....and polished with a silicone polish. Enjoy it as it is! And in the future, a wipe with mineral spirits removes any wax build-up. But Pledge is not a wax....and won't build up....See MoreNeed ideas for a farmhouse style dining table update.
Comments (20)So update on the table. My wonderful step dad who also happens to be a carpenter by trade, offered to build us a new tabletop however we want it! He plans on shipping it in two parts since he lives half way across the country but I'm ecstatic! He's currently finishing recreating this beautiful West Elm shelf for us: West Elm Round Wooden Shelf I believe, I will go ahead and paint the bottom white and allow the new wood top to take over the rest. I just wanted to extend my appreciation again to everyone whom replied. I hope that it is able to help others too!...See More101newkitchen101
