Today, I had a Quarantini cocktail and it was so yummy, that I stopped at the store and bought the ingredients I was missing. It had vodka, elderflower liqueur, prosecco, pear puree and a twist of lemon. Yum! A lot of cocktails are being billed as "Quarantinis;" do you have a fave?

And now for a culinary total non-sequitur... A local bakery at home makes Quaran Teeny Cakes. Love the name. I am making pumpkin custards, but I also assembled a Thanksgiving treat for the pumpkin haters. So darn cute.

Tonight after dinner I had hot cocoa with a dollop of Godiva chocolate liqueur. Is that a recipe?

Also not a recipe but last weekend I had Pearsecco. I bought more to have for Thanksgiving...

For Thanksgiving, DD (19) is making dinner — chicken pot pies with a recipe she found online. Fingers crossed. I’ll report back.

Omg - so cute. We are completely unimaginative at our house.... I am making TG dinner for the first time in about eleven years. Turkey roulade and maple pecan sweet potatoes along with a bunch of other stuff. Homemade pumpkin bars for dessert as I‘m not fond of pie crust.

Shrimp gumbo is like potato salad. Everyone's recipe is different. here is mine. Shrimp Gumbo Make a roux using equal parts oil and flour. I don't measure, but I probably use 1/3 cup or a little more. The best roux, I think, is made from bacon...so I fry a pound of bacon and use the grease to make the roux. Stir it constantly until it is very brown...sort of a chestnut color. Do not let it burn. Best to use low heat, if you think you might burn it. Chop 2 ribs of celery, one onion, and one bell pepper. After the roux is brown, turn it off and add the onions, bell pepper and celery. Cover it and let the heat wilt down the onions, etc. In a pot put 4 cans chicken broth. Add the roux with the chopped vegetables and cook until they are soft. Add a can of tomato sauce or you can use some tomato paste. I go by color...and I want it to be orange-y brown. Add a package of sliced okra. Season with Tony Chachere's seasoning...a seasoned salt, thyme, garlic powder, onion powder, a dash or two of Worchestershire....kind of up to you, but the thyme is necessary for a distinctive taste. (Four cans of chicken broth is usually enough liquid but it you want more, you can add another can or a little water. I used to make gumbo with water....this just happens to be better, but a little water isn't going to dilute the flavor.) When the okra is done...add the shrimp. You can turn if off and the shrimp will cook enough. Don't boil and boil after you add the shrimp. You can also add crab or other seafood. I might add crab but I never, ever, ever put sausage in seafood or shrimp gumbo....the reason being that the sausage will completely over power the taste. Some people like to make broth from the shells to add to the gumbo. I have done that but I have found that chicken broth is easier and has more flavor but yet it doesn't compete with the other flavors in the gumbo. Once you turn it off after adding the shrimp, stir in a couple of heaping spoonfuls of gumbo file'. That is another distinctive taste and adds to the taste of the gumbo. People say if you add okra, you don't need to add file' but I disagree. I don't use the file" to thicken the gumbo and the frozen okra has been blanched anyway so it isn't going to make the gumbo thicker. Anyway, you don't want it really thick...or at least I don't. You can add some chopped parsley or chopped green onions. Serve over hot rice. When I make rice for gumbo...or, really, any time, I add a big hunk of butter. It makes a better flavor. All of you who cringe at the thought of butter or bacon...this may not be for you...but it is very good gumbo, and a family favorite. Also, if you don't have shrimp or seafood, it is very good made with chicken. Boil it and take it off the bone and add it in place of the shrimp. ***************************************** I live 15 miles from the nearest grocery store. Krogers has packages of onions, bell peppers and celery already chopped in their frozen food section. I keep some on hand and it is very handy. Along with frozen okra, I can throw this gumbo together in a about an hour or less.

A couple more good ones New Orleans Praline Pie Ingredients: 1 Cup Chopped Pecans 2 Tbsp. soft butter or margarine 1 Tablespoon lemon juice 1 Cup Firmly Packed Brown Sugar, divided 2 Pkgs. (8 oz.) cream cheese, room temp. 1 9 Refrig. pie crust 1 Tsp. Brandy Extract 2 eggs 1 Tsp. Vanilla Extract 1 Cup Whipping Cream Procedure: In a small bowl mix together 3/4 cup pecans, the butter and 1/4 cup brown sugar. Place pie shell in 9Â” pan and flute edges if desired. Spread pecan mixture evenly in bottom of pie shell. Bake in preheated 4250 oven for seven minutes. Remove and set aside. In electric mixer, beat together cream cheese, 1/2 cup brown sugar, eggs, lemon juice and extracts. Pour into pie shell over pecan mixture. Bake at 425 F for 25 minutes or until center of filling is set. Cool then chill in refrigerator for one hour. Meanwhile, whip cream in small bowl of electric mixer until stiff then whip in remaining 1/4 cup brown sugar. Spread whipped cream over top of cooled pie and sprinkle with remaining 1/4 cup pecans. Chill at least two hours longer. This one is from a great cookbook that my home town church sold years ago. Everything in that book is great. Chocolate Banana Coconut cream pie 1 9in deep dish pie crust 1 T milk 1 T butter ½ cup semi sweet chocolate chips 2 bananas sliced 1 ½ c cold milk 1 (4oz) pkg. Instant vanilla pudding 1 ½ cup flaked coconut 1 ½ cup cool whip 1/2cup toasted coconut Bake pie crust as directed on package. Melt 1 T milk, butter, and chocolate chips in microwave fro 1 ½ mins on high. Stir chocolate until completely melted. Spread chocolate evenly over bottom of pie crust. Layer bananas over chocolate. In large bowl mix 1 ½ cup milk and pudding wth wire whisk for 2 minutes. Stir in 1 ½ cup flaked coconut. Spoon over sliced bananas. Spread cool whip evenly over pudding and top with toasted coconut. Chill 4 hours. We love the key lime pie at Pappadeaux's, here is their recipe. Pappdeaux’s Key Lime Pie with raspberry sauce ***Filling*** * 8 ounces Cream Cheese (softened) * 1 can Sweetened Condensed Milk * 2/3 cup Cold Water * 3 Egg Yolks (beaten) * 1/8 teaspoon Salt * 1/2 cup Flour * 5 tablespoons Rose's Sweetened Lime Juice * 5 tablespoons Key Lime Juice or Reconstituted Lime Juice * 1 teaspoon Lime Zest (very fine) ***Pie Crust*** * 3/4 cup Graham Cracker Crumbs * 1 cup Ground Pecans ( finely ground ) * 3 tablespoons Sugar * 1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon * 4 tablespoons Butter Melted ***Raspberry Sauce*** * 3/4 cup Raspberry Preserves * 1/4 cup Water For Filling: Beat cream cheese until light and fluffy add sweeten condensed milk, beat mixture until completely blended. Use a 2 quart sauce pan to whisk egg yolks with water, add salt and flour. Stir constantly, completely mixing flour into liquid. Add lime zest, Roses Lime Juice and Key Lime juice. On low heat, or in a double boiler, whisk the egg mixture and stir constantly until mixture thickens, resembling pudding in texture and thickness. When egg and flour mixture is thickened add cream cheese. Whisk constantly taking care not to scorch the bottom of pan. Stir until pie filling starts to thicken and is completely mixed. When the filling is thick pour into the prepared pie shell. Chill pie serveral hours before serving. For Crust: Mix all together in a bowl, add melted butter blend well. Press into a buttered pie pan. Place in a preheated at 350 degrees oven for 7 - 10 minutes. When crust is slightly golden remove from oven and cool. For Sauce: Mix in sauce pan until preserves reaches boiling point. Simmer for 4 minutes remove and pour through a fine strainer removing seeds and chill. Sauce may be used to garnish pie when served.

Have lots to do today since the electric power was off nearly all day yesterday, so I have one less day for all of the preparations for Thanksgiving. Another idea for guests to make and serve themselves a light breakfast before a big meal is to put a toaster or toaster oven on a card table in an out-of-the-way place. Also on the table, put bread plates, butter, margarine, table knives, and the following toppings. Toppings for Toast Peanut Butter Cream Cheese Spread Mix equal parts of peanut butter and cream cheese with an electric mixer until smooth. For a sweeter spread, add a little honey to the mixture. The spread will last a week or more in the refrigerator. Apricot Butter Boil two cups of dried apricots with two tablespoons of sugar and 2/3 cup water until soft. Put in a blender and puree with four tablespoons of butter. Add one teaspoon vanilla extract or 1/2 teaspoon almond extract. Whipped Honey Butter Use an electric mixer or blender to whip 1/2 cup butter with 2/3 cup honey. If the mixture is too stiff to aerate, add a bit of milk. Season with ground cinnamon if desired. Jazzed up Cinnamon Sugar for Buttered Toast 2 tablespoons sugar 2 tablespoons raw sugar Finely grated zest of one orange 1/2 tablespoon cinnamon A few fresh gratings of nutmeg (I scrapes of the nutmeg on the grater) Mix and store in a jar. Keeps unrefrigerated for a couple of weeks, for longer storage, put in the fridge. P.S. I, too, am considering making the Eggs Benedict Casserole, but for Christmas. It sounds so good, Glenda. Buttery Yeast Rolls I found this on Food.com Prep Time: 2 hrs Total Time: 2 hrs 18 mins Yield: 20-24 rolls Ingredients 1/2 cup water 1/2 cup warm milk 1 eggs 1/3 cup butter or 1/3 cup margarine, softened 1/3 cup sugar 1 teaspoon salt 3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour ( NOT bread flour!) 1 package dry yeast ( 2 1/4 tsp) 1/4 cup butter or 1/4 cup margarine Directions Place all ingredients except the 1/4 cup butter into bread machine in the order recommended by the manufacturer. Select the dough cycle and start machine. Shape dough into 20 to 24 balls and place in buttered pan (s). Melt the 1/4 cup butter and brush it over the tops of rolls, saving the excess for brushing on after baking. Cover and let rise in a warm place about 1 hour, or until double in bulk. Bake at 375 degrees F for 15 to 18 minutes. Brush baked rolls with remaining butter. NOTE: This dough can also be divided into two portions and each rolled into a 12-inch circle; spread each circle with softened butter, cut into 8 wedges and roll up starting with wide end, to make crescents OR use this dough for cinnamon rolls or sticky buns. I made a batch of these today and they are really good. I used real butter and rolled them out jelly roll style and buttered and rolled them up and put them in muffin pans. I use the homemade Pam grease and the recipe made 14 large rolls. I baked mine for 15 minutes. I think I will get out two bread machines and make two batches for Thanksgiving. Sue

I can't recall making chicken pot pie before, but a few weeks ago I made this:

Just delish; omg the buttermilk biscuits -- a zillion times better than crust.

I thought pimentos were odd so I subbed carrots.

I thought the sauce was excellent .. the wine and Worcestershire really kept it from being a big gloppy rich mess. I thought gelatin and a roux was cheating, but it works.

2katz; do you have a recipe? id like roulade; i don't really like parts. We are getting catering ... roasted and carved turkey and sirloin, mashed potatoes and gravy. I add Marsala and cream to the gravy, make a green salad, baked yams, homemade stuffing, and pumpkin custard.

Sue, is it more Pear or more Secco?

I really enjoy chicken pot pie especially on a cold, chilly day. I've made my own crust before or used puff pastry but I'll have to try buttermilk biscuits the next time.

This Thanksgiving will be my first without all 3 adult children. I have been incredibly fortunate to have them all together for TG and Christmas. This year It will just be DS, DDIL and grand daughter joining us so we'll downsize and have a turkey breast since they don't like dark meat.

This meal will be simpler and less prep. DH is in charge of the turkey and when we have a whole bird he deconstructs it a la Julia Child and then reassembles it before serving.

I'm curious to find out what the kids are bringing - they're doing all the drinks.

The fondue post gave me an idea about dinner tonight. We're at our place in the mountains without a fondue pot but I could use the warming plate. I'll have to see if I can find the ingredients when I stop in town this morning.

@blfenton - here's the pumpkin bar recipe

PUMPKIN BARS WITH BUTTERCREAM FROSTING

BARS

2 c sugar

4 eggs

1 c cooking oil

1 - 15 oz can pumpkin

2 c flour

2 t baking powder

1 t baking soda

½ t salt

2 t cinnamon

½ t ginger

½ t cloves

½ t nutmeg

Mix first four ingredients together and beat well

Sift the remaining dry ingredients together then mix in with wet

Grease and flour a 17x12x1 inch sheet pan then pour batter into pan

Bake at 350 degrees for 25-30 minutes

Cool completely before frosting

FROSTING

8 oz softened cream cheese

1 T milk or cream

1 t vanilla

1 stick (1/2 c) softened butter

4 c powdered sugar

Mix first four ingredients together and beat well

Gradually add powdered sugar and mix well

Thanks for the pot pie recipe 2katz, I am going to have to make some type of pot pie for hubs one of these days and I am not a fan of making home made pie crust and we can't justify spending the money for my usual store bought go-to. I'm cooking all kinds of things from scratch which ironically does not make me very happy. I am not a dough finessing cook and if I had the money I would buy all kinds of artisnal baked goods and pies, etc. . . .

At one point I got interested in pear wine, since I can only drink sweet white wines due to acidity issues and pears are a less acidic wine ingredients. It's rather hard to come by, and I really can't afford the calories or the price of specialty wines like that . . . I think the closest thing I could do would be pear juice watered down with reisling which is the only wine I can drink. Or maybe pear juice with some type of bubbly white wine . . . or a hard seltzer cocktail with pear juice like Mtn. posted.

Mtn, I thought it was more Secco, but I’ll have to test more to be sure. 😉 I was afraid it would be too sweet but it wasn’t, IMO.

The pumpkin bar debate raged here last night. I prefer pumpkin pie bars vs the cake sort. As far as drinks for a holiday with much to be thankful for we will uncork champagne!
