Paint Home Decorating Design Dilemma

What would you do to lighten up room. Painting walls is not an option

Looking to reno this cabin. I do like panels not fond of stain. My husband wants to leave it as is but I want to brighten up space. Looking into lighter floors but not sure if it would go with the color stain of cabin walls . Any suggestions
P.s. cabin will be blank slate i do not own any of furniture curtains rug ect.. in pic.

Men usually prefer natural wood, while ladies prefer it painted. Just a general fact off life. You need to split the difference. How high is the ceiling? Whitewashing it might lift the feeling of heaviness all the wood gives. But before you make such decisions, you need to upgrade the lighting. LED's in the 4000K range will give more of a 24/7 daylight feeling. Can you add can lights? Better lighting will make picking furniture fabric and other textiles easier, as well as color changes to the wood.

I have typhoon bordeaux with cherry cabinets and went with a creamy subway tile. I brought home over 20 smaples from 6 stores and the best match to my granite was biscuit by American Olean. I got it from Roma tile in Watertown and it was only $3.65/sq ft and they stock it. There's a bunch more tile stores in Watertown - tile showcase has beautiful tile but is a bit more pricey. They had a gorgeous crackle tile that had great depth. If I didn't alreay have brick in part of my backsplash I would have gone with that.

Kathi Steele, it seems like our comments crossed. I do have white washing in mind. I think I also got the answer about what the surround is that functionthenlook also suggests painting. Black is a good idea. It's not very big, maybe 15 x 15. I don't think we've figured out what to use it for exactly. It looks like a den, but we won't be putting a screen up anywhere. We do want to use the fireplace. So it will probably just be an extra chill-out sit-down space for reading/listening/chatting or alone time for two or three people at a time. There's a much bigger, brighter open space to the left where all the light is coming from where I expect bigger groups to gather for parties and such.

that ceiling is gorgeous. I'd do Simply White on the walls. I'd also make sure the current light bulbs are at least 4000K to give you a more natural light. maybe a few more lights would help? the one on the wall is pointing upward. the chandelier seems to be hung too high. try changing out the bulbs to a cooler temp for that one. or, get something with more bulbs. maybe some floor lamps? as for the rock fireplace, use a good limewash like Romabio. I think that alone would make a huge diff. have you thought about painting the trim around the windows in a nice white? some colors changes and landscaping redo would really do a lot. lets tackle some of the colors. Any of these are great w/your brick,,,,the copper color on the gutters, and the darker bronze/copper exterior lights. If you painted the underside a creamy white, and repainted the downspouts an actual copper (yam color front door. BM CopperMountain) or light bronze color, plus changed out the door/color, you would get something like this^: I actually just did this combo for another poster and her brick, but these colors and accents would prob work for you too. that sage green on the front door would be pretty. I'd do a darker garage door but would want the door to look like this. I think this shape w/the windows is more flattering. (the white one below w/the carriage hardware and windows is ok too), But you'd have to paint it another color. the white doesn't look good against your brick. Any of the color in this pic ^ would work on the garage, or some of the others I've listed in other pics would also work. I like these for your siding / trim/ door colors too. I gave you a blue/gray front door, new lights, address and a bronze metal garage door. I like the colors. in the back (and front) remove the grass next to the foundation and give yourself some flower beds. for a bit of interest, how about curving your walkway, or adding to it, and doing something like this? see these golden grasses and yellow/orange flowers? this is what you need to accent your brick in the flower bed. around the downspout, try the flower bed like this. some other colors any of these should work too doesn't have to be overly grand, you could even trim it out w/cement or pavers and do some type of pebbles or rocks. Just anything to seperate the grass and the bottom of the house. You can easily DIY this by cutting the grass back, and laying some dividing pavers.

Lighter and brighter window treatments, a better color couch, with nice bright pillows on it, a nice floral pattern rug, to go with what you choose for furnishings, will be a big improvement over that giant fish. Lighter paintings on the wall, that also go with your rug and furnishings. There isnt anything feminine at all in there right now. It is a very masculine looking room. I am sure once you redecorate, it will all look a lot nicer.

FWIW, I am one lady who has no interest in whitewashed and or painted wood cabins, etc. Lots of things you can do.

Longer curtain rods so that the curtains can be pulled back to uncover all the glass.

More light fixtures, floor lamps, table lamps, plug-in sconces that don't need to be hard-wired into place.

It's really a pretty space. I would definitely try some light furnishings and rug before redoing floors. What colors/style do you like? And for the art work, consider options framed with large mats and black frames to break up some of the wood on the walls.

You do have alot of light in this room. I love the pics and suggestions everyone has posted. It is a large room with all the wrong furniture. The ceiling is beautiful and it would be awful to paint it. I too own a log cabin and there never seems to be enough lighting. Without white ceiling or white walls light does not reflect. It just seems to get absorbed and the larger the room the more difficult it is to light. Are the ceiling fans necessary? Do you have central air? What is your climate like? If you find that you dont use them can you switch them out for a track light or directional light?
