Windows Design Dilemma

windows- combination grill/ no grill

New construction - craftsman/farmhouse
I’m thinking windows with grills would look better on the front of the house. The windows on the front of the house will be fixed pane. The back of the house will have a lot of windows and the view will be beautiful. I’m thinking grills will obstruct the view. I’m also thinking some windows will open and some will be fixed pane. For instance the sunroom windows will open but the windows in the dining room won’t. Would it look ok to combine grill/ no grill if you keep them on the same side?

I think muntins on the upper sashes as shown in the plans would look best. They'll mostly be above your head even when seated, so I don't see them obstructing the view very much, and they add some character to the house.

This is an old thread, but I was just looking at these today and thought I would add my 2 cents for anyone else who might stumble across this in the future. On the patio doors I looked at, the spacer was aluminum/steel/silver colored and was just too noticeable. I can see how you could see through narrower grills (or see odd shadow/light patterns), but I don't think we would do the SDL even if they didn't cost extra.

I actually do not like grilles but unless you are willing to change the garage windows I would just leave them all. Looks like a farmhouse to me. Not sure what you mean by modern craftsman but IMO the interior does not need to be the same as the exterior in style.

It depends on the window size, window type, grid pattern, house style, etc.. It's not a cookie cutter answer typically.

Okay- we have a French colonial home 2400 square ft.
We plan to change out windows in addition to our kitchen remodel. Planning on grilles only on top portion of window using the 4 light design, all black exterior windows. Is 3/4 inch the right grille size or should it be more narrow? Thoughts? Much appreciate your time!

I have no idea what the width of our grilles will be. I didn’t even think to ask. We might be trusting our builder too much.

Unless you and your budget are a glutton for punishment...I can see no reason for SDL in today's day and age.

what windows would you use for your own home, if cost isn’t a factor?

Just curious, I asked the same question recently about swimming pool construction, interesting to see what contractors & suppliers would use for their own homes.
