Cost of true vs. simulated divided light windows
Comments (9)Our contractor ordered 6 new Marvin wood double hungs on our behalf. We discussed and he wrote in his notes that we wanted 6 over 1's - true divided lights. In error, he ordered 6 over 6's. They came in, he installed them when we were at work, I came home, saw them and knew immediately they were wrong. To help find out the cost of what was involved before I spoke to the contractor the next day, I called Marvin and asked loads of questions and found out that it was going to cost somewhere around $2200 to remedy. We then talked with our contractor and he volunteered that because the error was his, he would get us new lower sashes. He ate the cost. If you reject the SDL's, the rep and his company will have to eat it. However, depending on how Weathershield operates, the rep might be able to return them for some amount of credit. That's an unknown you won't be able to find out about. However, I'd call Weathershield's customer service directly and see what you can find out from them...a little more info can only help you in this one. If you don't like them, and they are not what you want for your house, reject them. You will cringe every time you look out your windows....See MoreWindow grille options - need opinions!
Comments (9)JUst put 3 new windows in my kitchen remodel - I went w/Marvin - 6/1 - SDL - the grids are attached on both sides of window wood - not removable - Yes harder to clean but everything is relative - the rest of the home is 6/1 true divided single pane (or shall I say pain!) - 1930 Dutch colonial revival I spent much time agonizing about this detail - I really wanted to match as closely as possible the detail in the other windows. The muntins are an architectural detail that really makes a statement - start looking at curbside view of homes - see what you like and don't like. I really do not like grills btwn glass - I just think it really cheapens the look - I don't like Anderson's removal grills - yes, makes easier cleaning but to my eye it cheapens the look. I would imagine that pricing has got to be close with grid options. I'm a lover of old buildings and architecture so my keen eye picks up on such details. Muntins should stand out - not be a little detail (betwn the glass grills)IMO. You have to live in the home - so you ulitmately decide what is important to you. One word of caution:: In reviewing the Marvin catalog for window order look CLOSELY - those pics are tiny & make seeing the true detail very difficult. Many of their windows start to get horizontal - Windows should be vertical like a cereal box - My contractor calls the "squatty" but look at the individual panes in your choices make sure they are vertical - My architect friend pointed it out to me - when i wasn't really seeing it ,she said "don't you want to take that window & turn it" then I got it. Now when I'm looking at curbside appeal - I see far too many people have done replacements with "squatty" windows Looks funny - would drive me crazy Good luck Eileen...See Moreshould muntin or divided light sizes be similar?
Comments (3)Muntins are a tricky thing. Seems like every company uses a different profile, and the widths can vary too. I've seen muntins anywhere from 3/4" to 2-1/4". Most common nowadays is 7/8". I'm surprised the window guy didn't produce a grille/muntin sample for you to approve. Since this is your home, and you specifically insisted on the new blending in, I'd bring it to the GC's attention, and let him know you are not satisfied. Be firm, and get what you want....See Moresimulated divided lights or grilles between glass
Comments (2)Cleaning windows with SDLs is not the hardest thing in the world, just not as easy as cleaning windows with GBG. Self-Cleaning glass is a nice addition and usually not that expensive. Is the look of SDLs to maintain the interior look or the exterior look. We rarely see them specified on all four sides of the home as they are a pretty expensive option....See Moredelcogreg
