Comments (6)Regarding ductwork, do you know how many return air ducts you have? Since often times ductwork systems are undersized to begin with, I don't like the idea of increasing tonnage without ensuring the ductwork is in good condition and properly sized. However if the old system did a good job handling the the temperature throughout the house, it may be okay. An extra return may need to be added. The XP16 is a heat pump. I assume he meant XC16. The XC16 is a 2-stage unit, which can help control humidity better, but I would not use it without a furnace with a variable speed blower. It is the variable speed blower that is required to get more than 14 SEER in most cases. The XC15 is advertised as a very quiet unit, but that doesn't mean the XC16 will be loud (the brochures should have the dBa sound ratings). The Lennox guy should have given you model numbers. You'll want to talk to the Trane dealer about sizing to ensure 2.5 tons is sufficient. Did any of them do a load calculation to prove that you needed more capacity? You aren't comparing apples to apples with both quotes, since the Lennox furnace does not have a variable speed blower, which I'd recommend for greater efficiency and comfort. They can also overcome slightly deficient ductwork systems by adjusting their speed. If the ductwork is in very poor condition, however, they can be louder (I think you'd know if the ductwork was in poor condition/undersized, as you would have had symptoms with the old system, like uneven temperatures, noise, and lack of airflow)....See MoreGoodman VS. Comments (9)I'm learning more all the time. Can you tell me more about the TXV metering device for the E-Coil? My current 80% unit already has a condensate drain pump used when I run the AC in the summer and I have not had a problem with it. This self contained pump sits on the floor next to the furnace and pumps the condensate into my sump pump then the sump pump pumps it out of the house. Wouldn't I just run the high efficiency furnace moisture drain pipe out to the same pump? I have to imagine that moisture drain pipe is up high on the High Efficiency unit and my condensate pump is on the floor, gravity will do the job unless the pump fails and the water backs up into the furnace. Is that the same moisture drain pipe that I have on my current 80% efficiency furnace that drains the condensate when I run the AC in the summer? One of the quotes I got from a HVAC hybrid install (95% efficient furnace w/ 2 stage variable speed furnace and 15 or 16 SEER Heat Pump) was to put a catch pan under the furnace with the furnace up on blocks and put a pump in the drain pan that pumps the condensate water into my sump pump. This gives you more time to deal with a pump going bad vs the self contained pump I have currently. I have another question about buying the new 95% efficient furnace. My current furnace is 80% effecient and is 100,000 BTUs. I have replacement choices of 90,000 BTU or 115,000 BTU replacement. My house is 2000 sq. ft, not including basement. Is there much efficiency difference between the 2 choices? I know the bigger unit will probably supply more heat, but is that at more cost in energy? Or is the difference nominal. My first thought is to go with the bigger unit for only $100-$200 more in cost. Mikes...See MoreNeed Help With HVAC Decision
Comments (17)I'd have a Home Energy Efficiency Audit performed & do whatever is cost effective to bring the heat-loss/heat-gain down so 4-Ton or say 46,000-Btuh will handle the heatload with ease. That is one size down to a 14AJM49 with a RHKL-HM4821 air handler with a ECM motor, it gets 16-SEER. It is nearly always very difficult to achieve enough air flow for 5-ton of cooling. However, that Rheem 14AJM56 is actually 4.5-Ton @ 54,000-Btuh & 1600 to 1700-CFM would work okay if you match it with the RHKL-HM6024 air handler with the ECM motor, it gets 16-SEER. ARI#3799470 For 2-story home you probably should have a zoned system. Phil, PA 2.5% summer design is 90-F dry bulb & 74-F wet bulb around 47.7% relative humidity. That is 103 gr moisture per lb dry air; while indoors at 75-db & 62.5-wb is only 66 gr moisture per lb air. Infiltration would add considerable latent load; therefore you need long runtimes to keep humidity near 50%. Comments (16)Hi guys, This is the final system I want to go with: AHRI 6389534 24ACC624A003 Performance series 2 ton air conditioner (16 SEER, 13 EER) CNPVP3017ALA coil 59TN6A080V17-14 Infinity series variable speed 2 stage gas furnace (96% eff.) SYSTXCCITC01-A Infinity touch control wifi enabled thermostat Media filter Carrier HUMCCLBP2417 Humidifier I got a Man J calculation of 120K BTU heating, 5 ton cooling. The house is two-story with 3400 square feet. The first floor is 1700 with about 400 square feet open to second floor. I want to run this by the experts here to make sure 80K BTU furnace won't be a problem with a 2-ton single stage condensor. Thank you! jeff...See MoreBT
