should this cabinet have 1 door or 2? an trouble choosing door style!
Comments (5)It won't look bad single, but like Christine said, it is annoying to have to step back to avoid getting whacked in the face when you open it. I do think it may look better single. You shouldn't have to replicate your "faux stile" with your new doors if you do get two there. Simple order them larger to meet in the middle. Raised panel doors do look better as a bigger door. Your first link showing the monarch style with the raised panel in the drawer front would look okay with a recessed panel instead. I think a raised panel with that small of a surface area looks silly, but that may just be a carryover from having to raise those types of panels by hand (extremely dangerous!) I worked for several years at a cabinet door shop. Good choice on the cope and stick instead of the miter for a painted finish. edited to clarify.....See MoreCustom Kitchen Cabinet Question and Door Style Input
Comments (43)OMG I love those Medallion kitchen cabinet doors! I've gone so far as to replicate them. I LOVE LOVE LOve their lines! I've had a pic of them forever, and have not given up on the idea of buying the doors for other cabinetry. My replicas are pretty darned good, though. LOVE them. I also live and breathe for inset cabinetry. It makes me go, "ahhhhooooooohhhhhhaaaaaaaa..." I disagree with FriedaJane that there is "a lot of lost space" with inset cabinetry. This has been beaten to death, but once the inset cabinets are put together, they're brought out to match the 12.75" "standard" cabinets, which makes the inside space the same. I'm here to tell you. Plus, if you were to order them, you can order them as deep as you'd like. (Brian @ The Cabinet Joint.com does it for me, yet the ones I've picked up at the H4H were the same depth!) A couple of commercial (Norcroft) base cabs I bought before I knew any better have really stupid upper drawers: 3" tall. Just look at that and get what you want. I've never heard that independent carpenters can't make frameless. It's so much easier than inset, because there's so much less precision. I'm one, who has no set, follow-the-lines design style. I think you can achieve a combination of the items you enjoy, and it'll look collected, vs. purchased. I feel sorry for people who buy the showroom and talk about their "eye." I must admit, that table is over the top fancy and oh, so fun. Right now I'm negotiating a butt-ugly armoire on CL. It's so ridiculously contrived it makes me laugh every time I look at it. Someone has painted it, so it's fancy-ness is somehow under control, but again, so over the top. If I get it, I'll make it work and love it. I really look forward to seeing what you bring together!...See MoreKitchen wall cabinet door style
Comments (3)To change will cost a lot. We need to see the whole space but of course you know now you should have done the four doors not one on the top but 2 .I am surprised the cabinet company did not try to talk you out of 42” high doors....See MoreHow to choose the right color kitchen cabinets
Comments (11)Think about the style you are going for the home overall and your taste. Are you a modern person that likes simplicity = you can consider slab doors or shaker in the whites and the wood looks. Are you a more in the middle (transitional) who like a little modern and at the same time traditional aspects = you can consider shaker doors and if in your budget inset doors. Are you a traditional person = you can consider a shaker or a door with a raised panel or applied molding. As far as the color depends on your taste as well. White is a timeless color. It does highlight imperfections, scratches, dirt etc. Do you have kids? All things to consider. There is more maintenance required for the whites but they will give you a lot more mileage versus a set color. If you are a lover of the warmth of wood tones then you can definitely go with that as well. More forgiving than the white. Wood tones are coming back too. if you are a lover of color then you can consider a color in a painted cabinet. Lets say you like blues, I would try to keep it as neutral and monotone as possible like Hale Navy that has greys. Easier on the eye versus a royal blue that is in your face all the time and can eventually overwhelm you. One of the most important things to consider is the amount of natural light and other lights inside the home especially the kitchen. Lighter colors will yield an open feel, darker will yield and enclosed feel. Go with what you like and the style of the house and you will be on the right track. I hope this helps. Show us your progress. You can choose neutrals or whites in the permanent items such as a kitchen and add the color in the paint of the walls. If you tire of the color you can always repaint to freshen up your look. :-)...See Morecpartist
