Black and Blue salvia: Has anyone tried to over-winter bare-root
Comments (4)I winter over Black and Blue salvia by cutting back and potting it up then putting in a cool dark basement room. Once a month I give it a small amount of water to keep tubers from shrinking. In the early spring I put it under lights for new growth and plant in the garden after the last frost date. Some of my plants have been wintered over three or four years. Editted to add: when I cut it back I cut it way back to just a short stem. That should make even a large one easy to pot up. Comments (15)For a substitute for the 'Apothecary Rose', try the 'Portland Rose' (alias 'Portlandica'; but please don't call it 'Duchess of Portland'! No one called it that until the 20th Century). Here in coastal Southern California, it doesn't re-bloom (at least, it doesn't for me), but it does bloom dependably once a year with its big blossoms of a happy bright cerise. The leaves color nicely in the Fall. It's a modest and charming rose which somehow just has a more likeable personality than many of the more ambitious roses....See MoreSuccess! Florist's rose rooted!
Comments (19)Ok Laurie, I finally got some pics of my rooted babies. They are taking FOREVER to do anything. GELATO finally shot out a couple of new leaves a week or more ago, but now it's sitting there again. And I have one CHERRY BRANDY in one band pot, and two in another. They appear to have rooted a long time ago, but have totally stopped growing. I even gave them all a very tiny shot of some granular fertilizer a month ago. I'm hoping when the temps finally cool down maybe they will begin to grow some more. I potted up GELATO in early December. The CHERRY BRANDYs I believe I did in February. In December I also potted up several of the DA SUMMER SONG, but only one made it. It has actually grown about 8-10" and even bloomed!! (that's it in the gal pot to the left) I recently tried (yet again) to root some cuttings of the florist rose QUICKSAND... but I think the bundle of stems had been at the Safeway market for more than two days, so they dried out pretty fast, and it's been waaay too hot to try and root anything right now. I may try something again when it cools down. The one florist rose I keep looking for but haven't seen in two yrs is an oddball brownish-orange one called CHILIS. I tried to root it back then, but it didn't work. Haven't seen it there again at Safeway since then. Oh well, it's fun to try and root them....See MorePlease show me your florist roses : )
Comments (48)Thank you@Diane Brakefield! I have always dreamed of being a botanist since I was little, but unfortunately there are not many botany jobs in the Bay Area : (. God willing I will enter the tech industry and do gardening as a hobby. I would like to experiment hybridizing plants one of these days. Maybe even make my own rose variety : ). I absolutely love your Halloween decorations!!! They are so cute! I love the yellow of Julia Child with the orange Halloween decorations. What a beautiful bouquet! I showed the pictures of your roses to my mom and she was greatly impressed. She said that they were just lovely!...See MoreStephanie, 9b inland SoCal
