Help with staircase wall decor

I’ve been struggling to figure out what kind of decor or art work to hang on the staircase wall above our couch. Any ideas? Thanks!

From the photo, I would guess that you probably need a better furniture arrangement before you move on to art. If we could see all 4 walls of the room and your furnishings, we'd make better and more relevant suggestions.

I'd sentence that worker and the gazillion just like him, who stick a thermostat, light switch, air vent, etc. in the middle of a wall with no thought to how it's going to look, to a lifetime of grief, just like the people who are trying to decorate around their handiwork.

"...and now it looks too dull." To me, it doesn't look dull at all. That is certainly a rich, dark color on the wall. I love something we don't see often, like your blue wall. Also, I like a collected, gallery look on walls, but I think in your case it isn't quite working because you have unified the collection (that I can see). Also, some of the items don't have frames (Are they stickers? Painted images directly on the wall?), and are dark in color, so they don't stand out from the wall color. A great way to do a gallery wall is to unify a "theme" such as: All gold and black frames All mirrors All old-timey prints I encourage you to frame everything on the wall, place the items closer together (better to leave wall space AROUND the collection than space them out evenly. I'd place them maybe a 1 1/2" apart. Finally, I can't help but add this even though you didn't ask. When I first saw your post, I thought, I'd decorate those slick-looking stairs with a banister. That looks completely like an unsafe staircase to me, someone is going to slip and fall badly. And one more thing: You need some lighting in that stairwell. The slippery material and lack of anything to grab as one loses their footing is exacerbated by the dim lighting.

Please submit more photos of the room taken gradually going all around. I can say a few things for sure, Having the sectional and the chairs all against the wall is breaking one of the commandments of furniture arrangement. It is not good at all. If the mirror is to stay, and I am not convinced yet, the seating has to be arranged first, the mirror should be hung vertically with some interesting things to the left. Hanging it horizontally like that makes it look like it belongs over a bedroom dresser. And really, I would rather see it hung vertically over a dining room buffet towards the left so it reflects your well-dressed table and chic diners, and to the and you can hang some vintage plates and bracket with an urn or marvelous candlesticks, etc. Your problem with how to arrange the furniture is why so many Houzzers despise sectionals. When one moves, they just don't work, and they don't play well with other furniture. Are you staying in this house? Have you thought about getting rid of the sectional and purchasing a good quality clean-lined sofa such as a tuxedo that you can have forever that will go with everything and fit everywhere? I haven't seen the rest of the space, but the chandelier seems excessive. On the other hand, the rug is underwhelming and boring. You packed a punch with those strong blue chairs and wall. But the rug is blah. Why not get an Oriental or Persian carpet? The coffee table is underwhelming. Why not get a large ottoman and you can put a large tray on it? You also need a smaller table for the two chairs.

You've done pretty well considering how small the space is. I would have left the loveseat out. They are always the "fly in the ointment" when it comes to arranging. Its totally blocking up your space. Will it fit in the master bedroom? Your rug is too small though. Otherwise, stationary drapery panels and perhaps a linear sculpture above the sofa should finish it up.

Or different look this type small art over sofa/// to 'balance' with corner, maybe a color of lampshade. Empty there on wall... bring the eye over...

I think you need something sculptural/3-D over the couch. Nothing with right angles to conflict with the line of the sofa and the angle of the stairs. Of course, it would have to mean something to YOU; this is from my own collection but you get the idea.

But something horizontal could add interest to the blank wall.

I don't know the "key" to rugs .. though some break the rules! .. but here's a small rug placed by a pro... but here's jute in regular, and in colors idea to place under yours... ?

https://www.pinterest.com/pin/145522631679016519/ I'd do this along your window wall. You need to bring in a lot more white woodwork, the window seat wall would bring that in. Put the sofa where the love seat is now, remove the love seat and put the pair of chairs against the molding angled wall. Bring a color into the room with a larger rug and pillows and window bench seat cushion.

Hmmmm, I wonder if our living rooms are (distant, perhaps?) cousins? My set up is kind of similar to yours...If you leave the sofa where it is now, I'd absolutely-positively-definitely leave the wall as is, with nothing above the sofa.

You've been given a lot of good suggestions already, so I'd just see what works for you and your space. As for me, I played a lot with furniture placement and this is what stuck. I didn't like my sofa facing the fireplace at all and I didn't like my sofa on the opposite wall, so it went to its present place. These are old photos, and I have a few new things here and there, brought in a new African statue (not pictured), etc, etc., but it might give you an idea what I'm talking about.
