Is my Zone 7 too hot to grow Larix?
Comments (32)Drumroll, please... You have to remember I have been emailing people about plants for over 15 years now. There are a lot of people in my address book. I emailed Robert Redmon and he says UAH still has _3_, and the largest is 20 ft. tall and is coning! I just noticed something interesting about the MOBOT trees. Notice the only ones still alive were directly from Japanese scions or seed. This could confirm my suspicion that part of the problem is most seed stocks in the US have inbreeding depression because they came via a few trees in western Europe. BTW - I last emailed him in the late 1990s, but also via gardenweb. I think he used to participate here. The funny thing is I can't even remember what my user ID was back then. I started reusing gardenweb with this account when I lived near Rt. 28 in Fairfax Co. (That was my 2nd garden after my parents sold their house) He bravely tried a few experimental things there that people said wouldn't grow well in Alabama. Well, this proves sometimes those people are wrong. Although I don't know that anyone told him Larix wouldn't grow. BTW - no, I hadn't clicked on the link! It just said Trees. But by the time I posted what I posted in response to Betsy, I had already emailed Mr. Redmon. Comments (15)Barbara, it's a hot day here when it's 80! Mind you, I'm about a 5 minute walk from the Fraser river and as you know large bodies of water will temper the air. It gets a little warmer farther in the valley, by about 10 degrees, but here on the We(s)t Coast we don't get the hot and cold they get further inland in the Interior out Myrle's and Faye's way. To each his own, and while you can dress for the cold, society does not allow us to undress for the hotter days, so, my wife and I prefer this temperate rainforest we live in. FF, the sun's angle is just basic science, the lower the angle the less intense it is. Sun tolerance basically comes from the plant staying turgid enough to continue to support itself provided it stays hydrated. The sun's intensity at our latitude is seldom able to evaporate enough water from within the plant's tissue to cause sunburn. It can and does happen, and it happens in July/August when the precipitation falls off and we're unable to provide enough additional hydration to the plant. Some Hosta species and cultivars are better able to cope with lower levels of hydration than others. For example, most fragrant-flowered hostas are very sun tolerant, whereas certainly for me any members of the Hyacinthina family can begin to look quite desiccated by mid-august if I don't supplement their water needs. As a broad rule, variegated hostas with a lot of white are less sun-tolerant. Hostas with more substance to their leaves tend to fare better, but be aware that blue hostas will go green if in too much sun because their waxy coating -which gives them their blue appearance- melts in too much sun. Comments (13)Thanks Lori! I agree ~ I needed something somewhat attractive, since I am in a front-facing condo. So I ventured into the woods and cut down a bunch of 3/4-in or so bamboo, and used twine to lash it together. It has worked pretty well thus far. Unfortunately, during a couple thunderstorms, the whole thing ~ pot and all, has toppled over. Luckily the vines escaped unscathed, with only negligible tomato and small branch casualties....however, the bamboo cage broke apart at a few junctions, so I have had to re-lash with more twine here and there. I have since drove 2 stakes into the ground, diagonally behind the pot corners, and secured with rope to the lower bamboo junctions for additional support. If a considerably strong thunderstorm is on the horizon, I carefully pick the whole thing up and move it to the patio...ugh it is so f*ing heavy & tall! ~Caroline...See More11/8/15: phosphorus from manure & phosphorus factory & air pollution
Comments (64)Jim: Trader Joe is a local store, that's where I get my RAW nuts to roast. RAW cashew roast at 300 for 15 min. is great snack. Folks who eat more nuts have smaller waist line. Google MUFA and belly fat loss, you'll see plenty of studies backing that up. MUFA is mono-saturated fat in nuts, olive oil, and avocado. Still feel bad that my Dad died of a stroke when he was 85, that could had been prevented if there's a Trader Joe back then. My Dad loved nuts, but all the nuts were salty back then. Now I buy RAW nuts and roast them to avoid the salt. Eating nuts cut down the risk of stroke by 30%, if there's no salt. Carol: Losing weight is easier than taking care for my kid. Hopefully she likes salad. ANYONE know of a tasty salad-dressing for kids? Full-fat is OK, I need to get her to like salads. Here's a link "6-salad ingredients that help to lose weight": Hemp Seeds "These trendy seeds are a great source of satiating protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and fiber," says Kohn. Also, because they're slightly sweet, they satisfy your sweet tooth without added sugar. You can add a tablespoon to your salad for a reasonable 40 calories. Avocado Half an avocado (160 calories) is loaded with heart-healthy vitamins, minerals, and fats, says Kohn. Plus, the fruit is so creamy and smooth, it can also function as dressing—so you can subtract the 100 or so calories you'd normally take in from ranch, Italian, or even oil and vinegar. "The vinegar may suppress appetite, stimulate the metabolism, and reduce water retention and bloating," says Kohn. And at five calories." http://www.womenshealthmag.com/weight-loss/best-salad-ingredients-for-weight-loss *** From Straw: I agree with apple cider for weight loss, the acid helps with digestion of starch. Ever since I squeeze fresh lime into my water, I eat much less. Before this the sugar in commercial juice really stimulate my appetite. What's your favorite salad dressing, or bottled salad dressing? Thanks. I checked Pinterest and the most popular salad dressing recipe, is also the most simple: Copycat Babe's salad: http://www.sugarandgrace.com/2013/06/15/copycat-babes-salad/ INGREDIENTS: 2 TBS sugar 1 tsp salt 1/4 tsp fresh ground pepper 1/4 c apple cider vinegar 2 Tbs canola oil (I usually use olive oil in salads, but here I feel it is just too strong) 1 head iceberg lettuce...See MoreKW PNW Z8
