Bathroom Ceiling Paint - High Humidity

Hi all - I need some advice. We took our bathroom down to the studs and drywall is going in next week. My contractor has asked me to pick out the paint for the ceiling. He asked for a Paint & Primer in One.

I purchased Aura Bath & Spa paint for my walls. And I am stuck trying to find the best paint for the ceiling. In my old bathroom there was black marks on the shower wall likely from the hot shower we take. So we want to ensure this doesn't happen again.

Does anyone have a brand that they use for High Humidity Bathroom Ceilings? I have tried Google and reading reviews online. Once you read into each product either someone loves it or hates it.

Let me know if you have any recommendations on Ceiling Paint Brand.

I used Glidden Kitchen and Bath paint decades ago, in a bath that doesn't have ventilation, so it is remarkable that there hasn't been any mildew or mold with the exception of from a leak around a window (on the wall). And the paint looks fresh still. Of course, back then "primer and paint in one" wasn't available.

I don't know if a combo product will or will not perform as well over time as separate applications. When I reno'd my kitchen 6 years ago, I made the effort to prime the walls separately - it didn't take that long. Clearly your contractor wants to save time and effort.

I hope that you are improving your ventilation (out through the roof, not into the attic!!) so you shouldn't have black marks forming from your showers.

We have a similar construction (cathedral ceilings, no skylight). We removed the wallpaper (ours was floor to ceiling wallpaper) and painted walls white. We did the same, remodeled the hall bath first and used that while the MBath was being remodeled. The hall bath we added a sink and kept the original 70s hanging lights (chrome globe) over the vanity. Our bath/shower in that one is perpendicular to the exterior wall, so I painted that wall as an accent (kids picked the color, its a screaming lavender). Figured that short wall wwould joe be easier to repaint than the higher walls.

As localeater mentioned "Are you going to run the black hex up the wall behind the tub?" to which I'll add and everywhere else the vinyl is now? Or perhaps a different tile in those areas? That would be a big determinant regarding colour.

Have you checked to make sure your exhaust fan is actually exhausting to the outside? Is it powerful enough for the size of the room? Is there a big enough gap under the door to let in makeup air so that it can work properly? Is it set on a timer so that it runs for 20-30 minutes after each shower has ended?

We’ve had great success with our BM Aura on our walls and ceiling in hall bath. We live in a moderate, yet very humid coastal environment and have had no problems with it. Actually my painter screwed up and painted gloss on ceiling in MB and other hall bath by mistake. He knocked some off my bill and I’ve lived with the gloss. Hate its looks but it compares favorably to the BM Aura.

Paint and Primer in one doesn't mean this paint can go directly over the substrate without it being primed correctly. It's a misleading statement on the paint cans.

The statement just means that if your primed and painted walls were pale yellow and you wanted to paint it beige, you would not have to prime it white first before you paint the beige.

You can use the same Aura paint on the ceiling...........BUT YOUR CONTRACTOR MUST PRIME THE CEILING FIRST IF IT'S NEW MATERIAL.

Tile the ceiling over the shower. it will make a huge difference. Ceiling fan (which is outside of shower) can help manage steam. I have never had a problem.

Growing up, long before exhaust fans, rule was, open the window after you bathe or shower. Close the bathroom door, go and put p j’s on, then close the bath room window. Never saw a speck of mold, or peeling paint.

First address the venting there is no paint going to handle steam day in and day out without good venting. You can use the same paint on the ceiling and BTW get a better painter IMO no such thing as primer and paint in one can and especially new drywall since it for sure needs to be primes and often 2 coats of primer.
