Ideas for DIY bathroom renovation

Hi, we moved into a new home and while I love the bathroom overall, its a little dated.

Thinking of painting the cabinets, new hardware, new light fixtures....anything else you would recommend? I love the look of framed mirrors too but have NO idea what to do with these - basically they are 3 side-by-side mirrors and the 3rd one extends to the right of the second sink. The wall "sets in" a little for the mirrors so I think that if I removed them it would be weird, if I framed them it would be weird because the frame extends so far past the sinks? I dunno. any advice would be welcome for this bathroom!! thank you!

I would paint the cabinets and change the hardware, wallpaper the mirrors and the wall, change the light fixtures, and get a new mirror for each sink.

Yes, wallpaper the mirror. I doubt that you will notice the mirror seams, especially if you hang a heavy liner first and use a busy wallpaper.

I think pre-made laminate counters can be had quite cheaply. Looked it up, Lowe's website has a 6 foot laminate ready to install for $67. YOu'd have to cut the hole for the sink though. Still has to be easier than buying supplies and tools and attempting it yourself, and maybe messing up...I'm sure they could tell you what to cut it with. You can rent the proper saw if you need to (from them or rental places)Depot's site didn't list any, but I know they have them. I don't think I would scale down the vanity if this is your main/only bath. You need the storage. Consider a vanity that involves more drawers, which make more efficient use of the under-counter space than cabinets do, but otherwise just get lots of organizers. I did one house where a previous owner had removed a closet to enlarge the bathroom. We handled it by stealing the coat space at the back entry and inserting a wardrobe cabinet above the bedroom baseboard thus avoiding rerouting ductwork on the back side. Built in cabinets count as closets here to qualify a room as a bedroom. I once was planning a tiny bedroom closet to get a room to qualify as a bedroom and I asked the building inspector if the closet was required. He said that code officials didnt care; if the room was large enough, had a suitable window, and a smoke detector, it was legal sleeping space. MLS rules dictate the criteria for a bedroom and the interpretation varies. Another potential issue is bedrooms in walk out basements, is it a large 1 bedroom with 3 dens or a 4 bedroom house? IKEA had a great sink that only projected about 10 inches into the room as the faucet was at the side not behind the basin. Too bad they discontinued the model before I started anything. That house has plenty of room to add a basement bathroom so that will probably be the first step.

So, we've decided to get the West Slope light, it's OK and it's easy at this point. Now the decision is which size?? I've included a link to the fixture and am also attaching pics of a "mock up" in the room. We have some concerns about too busy/visually crowded for the intermediate size, but have to balance it against enough light, etc. The sink faucets are 39 inches apart (center to center) and we can't move them significantly because we're keeping the vanity (with new countertop). So what do you think about the 3 options? Are there any guidelines for vanity lights? The lights will be at the height of the current fixture. The mirror (just beveled/no frame) will sit under it. It's resting on countertop now. painting the cabs would be easy. do you like the grain? if not, use this to fill it,

obviously new lights.

for the mirror, you could trim out the edges and even do the middle seams.

there are diff ways to do it. lots of tutorials online

btw, this one has an inset and they used a backlit mirror

but at some point you could prob fill in that set-back portion w/drywall.

get some larger lights since you have a long expanse. have them come down a bit farther

yeah the mirrors are so annoying - all the ideas I see are for single mirrors in a normal length! ha. One step at a time - I can't wait to do the cabinets!

mish, the link I gave you is for kitch cabs, but they're the same oak. follow her guidelines and your cabs will look beautiful. Do NOT skimp on the prep portion! it's the most important part.

Also look at a few of these blogs, they didn't builder basic makeovers for less than 1K.

I would paint the cabinets, redo countertops and take mirrors out. I’d get one mirror for each sink and two uodated lights
