Comments (8)your problem is defining 'shade' ... shade can be a dark grotto under 200 year old trees ... or it can be so bright you need sunglasses ... and will get a sunburn ... in the former.. most things will lose vigor ... in the latter.. you can grow nearly anything ... in the olden days.. one might suggest you take a camera light meter and find out just how much light is there ... if i understand properly.. the wall is on the south side .... and creating the shade.. just move the plants as far as you can from the wall ... and plant whatever you want ... full sun is usually said to be 8 hours .... if your spot only has some shade around noon.. you are way past the full sun requirements of most plants ... as to what plant.. whatever you little heart desires .. start at a high end nursery ... see what spikes your interest... see if you can find it smaller online ... then bring some of your ideas back here.. and see if the crabby folks above have any specific ideas about what you are thinking about .... it is really hard.. for us across the WWW universe to simply spew out ideas specific to your garden ken...See Morevertical shrub for shade
Comments (2)Thanks, gardengal! Love the boxwood (sky pencil is not my favorite). Do you think it would do OK despite the lack of sun in my location? Should I worry about boxwood blight?...See MoreShade tolerant shrubs for zone 5?
Comments (6)so I'm assuming my soil is acid, ==>>> dont assume anything.... a quick call to your county extension or Ag office.. will probably get you a 'general' answer... and directions on how to get a good soil test done thru Moo U .... for the more specific answer .... MI's predilection toward sand.. where the pine tree forests thrive ... means stuff doesnt necessarily build up ... like it might in other types of soil ... or i am wrong.. call the COUNTY offices i noted.. that said... shade is impossible to discuss in words ... and frankly ... any other way ... you just plant things.. and see what happens ... try to stay away from things with big flowers.. as they need full sun ... and stay away from heavily variegated... as they might lack the chlorophyll to process what sun there is ... and be leery of yellows.. which might end up green.. in not enough sun ... otherwise... a few hours of dappled sun.. followed by full sun ... sound .. TO ME... like a lot of sun,.. in which 99% of things will thrive... yet you are limiting yourself to shade plants ... you would be much better off.. making a long list of things that make your toes curl.. and then asking us which of those might not thrive.. as compared to telling us to rule out just about everything.... if you get my drift ... regards from adrian MI... ken ps where are you????...See MoreShade Tolerant Shrub to Hide A/C
Comments (4)Good point Northspruce. It's a horizontal A/C, so leaves would easily get into the fan area. I'm also a real fan of evergreens. People seem to really like their dogwoods, so maybe I'll try to get one for a different spot. I like the ones with the fire red leaves in the fall. ( Dogwoods, right?) This morning I dragged one of those cedars you get at Walmart for $20.00 beside the A/C and it's a perfect size. Can you believe that cedar was bought last year, not even planted, and I think it's going to survive? One of the ones that got planted, is dead. Go figure. I'll keep my eye out for a globe cedar, as they're hardier if I recall. (?)...See MoreSmivies (Ontario - 5b)
