I did them in my kitchen (white quartz countertops, dark grey stained cabinetry, stainless accents), in a rustic-industrial style. Base bulbs, clear glass shades, plus a matching 3-light "chandalier" over the peninsula. Personally, I LOVE them. People can't stop commenting on them, and they're not harsh at all. As Feisty says, they're actually a very "candle"-like lighting and definitely not for working. Think the highest watt is 60, and that's not much. Keep in mind the bulbs are a bit more pricey ($10 each), but I can't imagine not having them. I have 7 in my home and have no complaints.

LARA, It's the same math: If you have 99 ( 8 feet is btw 96" , not 99 ) " and you have a light that IN TOTAL mount and fixture uses up 26 inches, you will have 37 inches from the bottom of the light to the counter top. If you have 96 inches...now you have 34 inches to counter top. If you want to know how it will look, on any you select? You get yourself a ruler, and you draw it out, using one inch, to one foot scale. Chain is easier than stem......so you really need to pay attention to specs, and mounting details. The length of your island must also be VERY much considered. Any solid shade will read heavier and larger than an open lantern or glass shade. Solid shades will direct light to the counter top, and more open or clear fixtures will give you more dispersed light.

Why chrome? You will find it last if you want "transitional" as it has fallen from favor.........for other finishes. However, you can also consider TWO only, linear shallow , and open. A lot of light, and no obstructed view of hood, or anything else for that matter. Yes TWO and perfect sizing below You need width.........without height in the fixture body. I have the same pendants as @mihelene. I have NO issues with glare although plenty of folks on this site warned about that and said it would be a problem ----- it has not been. I will second, though, that they do have to be cleaned regularly and that is another task to keep up on; although I often wonder if I had something not clear, surely it would be getting just as dirty and need cleaning.....? Maybe I should just feel grateful that my lights make me keep a cleaner house. ;) Also, it seems to me that the height of your ceiling isn't such an issue as the height the pendants are recommended to be hung is 30-36" above your counter top regardless of what height your ceiling is. I have 9' ceilings and my globes are about 15.5" long. I don't think an 8' ceiling would be a problem. (My sister in law has 8' ceilings and she just installed fixtures similar to your posted picture. They seem bigger than mine (perhaps just in width) and they look good.)
