How can we add tile trim after backsplash install?

How can we trim out the edges of our backsplash installation? Ours was just finished and the edges and caulking are messy And it’s driving me crazy! Is there a way to add a tile quarter round (like this one) at the edges after the initial tile installation?

Yes, you can clean that up with trim, but not quarter round. I’d try to find a liner, finished on all edges, that compliments the countertop. Can you post pics that show the cabinets and countertops, please? In the meantime, here’s what I’m talking about:

With that classic herringbone pattern, I wouldn't do a Schluter edge. Get a matching white pencil liner or flat liner tile. 1/2" wide if you can find it.

In this photo, you'll see the liner trim around the herringbone feature in the shower:

Just showing you the style of trim, not the material. See if the herringbone tile you have has matching trim pieces.

I think it's actually better to install it quickly. My quartz was installed, but the guys didn't caulk along the edges as I was going to have a backsplash installed. So the quicker the tile goes in, the less water leakage you'd get. Probably even easier if your faucet isn't installed yet either (don't have to work around it or risk getting it mucked up by grout, etc.). I don't think you can install the faucet until 24 hours after an undermount sink is set if that's what you're goint with.

Counter tops MUST go first: ) And in addition, by a quality fabricator who does the template on site via a laser and you specify the edge, he shows you where any seams will be located, whre if any veining you want prominent and what is possible with your slabs/s etc. Then you sign and approve the laser template with all information. You are home, present and on the site for the entire install. : ) THEN you can address a tile installation, and you tell that fabricator you ARE tiling and require no riser for the tops. : ) when he templates.

No to the 4 inch. We can't see your kitchen, so can't comment, but you may be able to do less backsplash than you think. You really only need it behind areas that get, well, splashed. Those are the cooktop and the sink. So you can really save a lot of money right there. And depending on the look of your kitchen, and how much your food squirts and spurts, you might even want a sheet of stainless behind the cooktop.

Nice job mocking up. The color of the light gray porcelain looks wrong with the counter (though who knows in real life). I am in the camp of "keep the backsplash simple and let the counter be the star," so I would avoid fancy shapes like the Nabi Harlequin. The Nabi Harlequin also seemed too starkly white for the counter in the mock-up. I think a light-ish color pulled from the tile (it seems like there are a lot of colors in there so this shouldn't be limiting) in a simple shape. Not too small, but it doesn't have to be 3x6--larger could be nice.

You could fit a piece of wood trim on that edge.
