One of the oddest - and certainly the oldest - things in our home is a 4,000 year old round jar, with a narrow opening, given to my father about 50 years ago, by the archaeologist running the dig on which they were working together in Jordan. It's a nice example of Iron Age pottery; fairly unusual to find a piece this size intact. This was an excavation that yielded a lot of household items, so many, in fact, that the dig leader gave away a few things like this jar after deciding what to keep for eventual museum display. I have sometimes had it out for living-room display but now I keep it on the bottom floor-level shelf inside a cabinet. This is because of our younger very spirited cat, who races around the house across furniture, table tops, shelves, etc. as she goes...

I was going through some of my Mom's things, she died in 2002. She had this black pirate looking kind of small chest. I opened it thinking it held some of her costume jewelry. Nope, I was kind of grossed out as to why she would save these things. There was a small box of her clipped fingernail tips. I guess she saved them so when she broke another nail she could repair it - that is my guess. In the box was also a gold covered tooth, root and all in a vial of formaldehyde and another vial of gall stones. I just put everything back in the box and put it back in the closet. Out of sight out of mind but they will have to get tossed out eventually.

Some cultures are superstitious about giving away parts of their bodies as it gives someone else power over them. Hair clippings and fingernails are usually burned.

dedtired, after my Dad passed away, we found a Sucrets tin in his drawer with baby teeth from my sisters and me. It was kind of touching, actually. Not gross at all.

Fingernail clippings can be used on voodoo dolls, for casting spells on a person, but hair clippings are generally also used on the dolls, as well as pieces of clothing owned by the person the spell is being cast on.

I am sure there is something more than this pine cone covered goose decoy that is odd in my house. Bought it years ago at a craft show in Michigan. I will think about it some more.

I don't have a pine cone duck, but I do have a huge (about 18" long) pine cone that I picked up from a ditch beside the road when we were driving through the mountains. I had to use a sweatshirt to wrap around it in order to pick it up because of all the sharp points, and then I noticed that it was oozing a huge amount of pine resin, and so I think it is glued to my sweatshirt now. It's on my dresser in Cathedral City, waiting for me to extricate it.

Jrb451, I can’t believe three of us have the exact same bat! I bought mine at a store on Pine Street in Philadelphia called Spirit Of The Artist. Mine is kept company by a snail and a mermaid.

The oddest thing in my house is probably my antique holly driving whips. They hang in my foyer on reels, framing a sleigh print. There are also fossils....

This is Titania. She was a wedding present to my grandparents in 1907. She embarrassed my mom when she was a kid and who would hide her when friends visited. I love her.

I worked with my brother and his partner for close to thirty years at their flower shop in Soho in Manhattan. It was high end. The shop was painted by an artist friend. They had another friend who collected old tools and pots etc. These were used as decor. (They were able to be sold, but no one ever expressed interest. Lol) Some of them were rather large. When the shop closed down in December of 2016, they were able to sell off most of it. There were four items that were left over. Three of them are large. Our apartment by nyc standards is big. (That means small anywhere else). Theirs is even smaller. Their friend had no interest in taking them back.

We have two items stored in our basement storage area. A scythe and a two man saw! 😂

I use the long handled pitchfork to hold up these heavy curtains. They close at night to help turn the former dining room into our bedroom/office when we open up the Murphy bed. (Husband and brother put in a sort of half sliding/pocket door they made to close off opening to kitchen. Our LR/DR is “cozier” now.

The fourth item is this large old industrial pipe holder. I like it’s form.

We have a lot of unusual things I think.

An antique Turkish lunch box. I inherited it from my godfather. He liked quirky things The original is put away in storage right now as I have some Halloween decor in it’s place, but it is similar to this piece.

We hung a small plastic handle attached to a strap (that had been part of some cheap toy) from the ceiling of the garage to act as a guide so we would know where to stop and park the minivan.

One day when I was driving in, I got a surprise to see this interesting/funny/macabre addition that my husband had rigged up.

The minivan is gone and the guide doll head had to be repositioned for its replacement car, but I still get a tiny frisson of pleasure every time I park in the garage!

That doll head is a bit creepy. We used to have a spiral in our garage that would indicate how far in to park Kevin's pickup, but it got shredded when we were moving some stuff around in the garage. We have no replaced it because we also have a red traffic reflector on a flexible post to indicate how far in to park. Kevin's truck just barely fits inside the garage, and so we got lucky with that. A longer pickup would not fit, and we do not want to park on the street in the heat in Cathedral City. We have never parked in the garage in Los Angeles, but then it does not have a door opener and has not been used for parking in decades. I don't think anyone in my neighborhood parks in their garage built circa 1950.

I have a jar full of teeth. It includes horse, donkey, alligator, dog, cat, raccoon, possum and even a few human teeth. It is in a very old jar that has a picture of a man with a huge smile on his face, molded into the glass. No animals were killed for their teeth. The human teeth, one with a gold crown, were in a little box that I found when I bought the contents of an old house back in 1980. Creepy? I suppose. I also have about 20 jars full of marbles. And several jars full of old buttons.

I really can't think of anything very odd in our house, we are so boring. I think I may have to find something weird at the flea market one day. HAHA!

I have my great grandfather’s headstone in my garage. It is marble and was weathering away. My grandfather had it replaced with something more durable. When my grandfather died, the headstone was passed on to my daddy. When Daddy died, my sister took it. I’m not sure how she foisted it off on me, but I have it now. My nephew has expressed in interest in having it when he settles down and has a house.

I also have a rock. It isn’t a special rock to anyone but me. It didn’t come from anywhere special. It came from a landscaping company in Milwaukee WI. But it has a story that I love. Ten-ish years ago, Nordstrom was selling a “designer” rock for $80. A landscaping company in Milwaukee donated a load of rocks to the Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee which then sold them for $80 each.

We have a custom made full story 8' x 6 1/'2 ' cherry bar with a sink & bar refrigerator and mirrored glass shelves in our family room. DH built it. We also have a full-sized pool table with stained glass lights, and a 12 foot antique oak church pew with brass numbers on each end of it, as well as a giant Guiness bar mirror from a pub in New Hampshire. Too bad I don't know how to post pictures. It's decadent.

We live in this room with Mexican 16 X 16" Mexican terra-cotta tiles with radiant heat, leather furniture and 2 Australian Shepherds.

I had forgotten about the ice saw I have although it is not that old. My father was a pipefitter and they had to provide their own tools. Over the years I have a good sized group of old physically operated tools of all types. I had wanted to hang them on the walls of the garage but husband did not want that crap on there. Now that he is gone I need to look at them and decide what to do with them. Not really something that others want but I love the texture and feel of them.

Lars, your comment about parking your car in the garage reminded me of when I lived in San Francisco. I shared an apartment with 2 friends and it came with a garage. Unfortunately our vehicle was a van and it didn't fit in the garage.

Also reminded me that when I lived there, my polling place was a neighbor's garage. I always thought that was pretty neat.

I could have sworn I posted these. First, my most absurd purchase ever, a non functioning toilet tank to go over a wall hung PR toilet. Had to have it because I liked the color. Bought from a NYC architectural salvage dealer. Tried for weeks to bargain them down. Unsuccessful.I guess they knew I was unlikely to find a substitute.

I have an old AP [Associated Press] teletype machine. It was used daily for decades at the station and still works/worked when I got it ... when we upgraded to a noisy dot matrix printer from the AP.

I've got an owl made from tunafish cans. One of my mother's fellow high school art teachers created it. My mother urged him to contact a crafts magazine about the owl. The magazine accepted it, and in gratitude he gave the original to my mother.

Everybody has such wonderfully odd - unique - weird - unusual items. And I can't think of anything in my home that's odd enough to be posted. I may have to buy something.
