Comments (31)Thanks yungman, As you described with a non-powered push mower, that's how they have to be turned around, for sure. The worst part is when I get into a corner and have to back up as well as turn around. How does a self-propelled mower such as the lawnboy 10965 do this? Is mower always trying to move forward? Does it lock the wheels when pulled backward? Or can it even be made to go backwards, without turning it off? I just read the manual on that mower and it said nothing as to how to back up, turn around. As you can tell, I know nothing of self-propelled mowers. The suggestion to get a zero-turn mower is really good, but from what I've seen, they are all more than I can afford. I agree with you about the Troy-bilt.\\ They actually had good stuff, before MTD bought them and now all they are are MTD's with the right's to the Troy-Bilt name and color. --MY old tiller was a true, Troy-bilt horse. Its engine finally gave up. I went to the dealer and was talked into, instead of getting a new engine, for as they said, such an old machine, why not trade in my Horse, down size to the "pony," and have a new engine as well as a new tiller. After much arm-twisting, I finally agreed. Sure wish I hadn't. It was the beginning of the 2d yr. that MTD owned Troy-Bilt. And the quality difference showed. The life time warranty that was on the Troy-bilt was voided by them. How dumb I was to give up my Horse. But I thought I was getting a real Troy-bilt. With MTD taking over, things sure have changed. Anyway, I hear you on Troy-Bilt. It was one of the best lawn equipment makers. Now it is, well, you know... I did look at the Toro equivalent of the Lawnboy. It seemed the same as the lawnboy, but one model had high, back wheels, which I think will make mowing my up/down/rutty back yard easier--but as I've asked before, with it being self-propelled, do I need to have a high wheel unit? Other than that, it looked like everything was the same, but more pricey. With maneuvering being the so important, if I get the self-propelled, am I going to have trouble (more than with a plain push mower) getting out of a corner as well as turning. Comments (7)I think you'll find that the 22156 is plenty heavy:) 'Thicker' cast-aluminum deck? How did you determine that? I had to go to the Toro dealer looking for some Honda blades (no luck there) yesterday, and what did he have displayed? A new 22156. Toro obviously is stuck with their red and white colors, but the 22156 just doesn't look as cool as the original LB 22271. One thing I like about the 22271 deck - the LB logo is cast-in, then ground off after painting - very distinctive. Anyway man, you're just going to have to make a decision. Once you decide to buy a premium mower, you realize there are a good number of them out there, starting on the low end with the Honda HRX and going up from there. It all comes down to the one that floats your boat. They're all good, but some commercials are too 'industrial' for homeowner use. I think the Exmark falls into that category, and the 22156 is right on the south side of that line - commercial enough for outstanding durability, but still user-friendly enough for the residential user. The HRX is more south of the line, but is still a tough mower. The Exmark is well north of the line with 137 lbs of long-lasting boiler plate that is needed for for the rough use employees tend to give to company equipment. I would not want to face that beast on a hot August day, pulling back against a slope or picking it up to put in a truck bed. The big benefit with the Exmark is you can get really big mowers, like the 26", for faster coverage of big lots. But hey, you have a happy choice to make. Comments (21)If anybody bothers to read ALL the information about the FPE breakers and panels, a number of things will become obvious. The first is that FPE fudged UL inspections for a number of years, and nobody knows how many. These inspections had to do with the breaker tripping under overload conditions. Second, the Canadian Federal Pioneer breaker recall involved some re-branded Federal Pacific breakers of unknown production dates, and Federal Pioneer manufactured breakers produced during 1996 and 1997. Third, although not widely known, the current replacement breakers made for FPE panels are simply Federal Pioneer breakers re-branded by whoever holds the franchise to sell them in the US., not sure what happens with this process in Canada. You can take to the bank, however, that up until at least the late 90s virtually ANY breaker produced to fit in an FPE panel is suspect as it was likely produced with the original FPE tooling. In addition to the breaker tripping issues there are a number of issues with the buss design in the panels and these in themselves are enough to warrent replacing the panel. Whether or not Federal Pioneer has changed the buss design to eliminate all the problems is unknown to me as I don't see any of the stuff where I'm located. What I do know is that none of my family has ever slept in a house with FPE breakers since I became aware of the problems back in the 70's. You are obviously free to use your own judgement in the matter, of course. Additionally, the company that manufactures Square D, Schneider, owns Federal Pioneer and appears to have been knowledgeable in the re-branding of FPE breakers that got recalled in Canada.
