Can I fit a PrepSink Drain Pump AND a Garbage Disposal?

I'm putting in a prep sink on an island, but cannot put a drain in the floor, so need to use a drain pump to pump to the main kitchen sink.

I'd like to put a garbage disposal under the prep sink as well.

Has anyone had success to get this all to fit?

(Sink is 8" deep, Garbage disposal is 12", Pump is 12", Cabinet height inside is about 37")

Grateful if you can post photographs of your installation.

I have no idea why are you doing this if you have a place for the sink and disposal ( which BTW I think should never be allowed) on a wall where the drain can work forget the island install I can only imagine the issues with this plan.

'drain pump to drain to the kitchen sink' What? Does that exist? Pumping up into the attic and back down? I'm so confused.

With all due respect, Breeze: no to the soap dispensers. I mean, it's =0.02 of course. But that's a definite no from where I sit. I realize I'm in the minority, or at least those of us not annealed to our soap dispensers are quiet about it, usually. I don't get it though. Why pass up the opportunity for a pretty version of such an every-day work item? I have this soap dispenser I got from Cost Plus for about .25 because it had a chip in it. It's made of marble with flowers chipped (deliberately) out of it so the chips are a grey color and the outside is shiny-black. I absolutely love this thing. It makes me so happy to see and use it! I actually bought it for my mom to use on the occasional week here or there once per year that she might visit. And then I thought how silly it was for this lovely item to sit fallow the rest of the year, so now I have it next to my prep sink. It's heavy so it doesn't move around and I can adjust where it does go to make room for a compost bucket up top if needed or extra dishes drying as needed. It's pretty, it's flexible, it's changeable, not that I can envision wanting to... At my other sink I have a beautiful hand-painted glass soap dispenser of Maine lupines, which lets me dream and wish wish wish they held the view out my window. sigh. You don't want to know what's really out my window.... If I'd bought an ugly matchy soap dispenser, it (a) would be on the fritz, probably and (b) would deprive me of the opportunity to enjoy this functional art. So I'm just putting in a word for the minority: no GD, don't miss it; no soap dispenser, wouldn't want it. :) Isn't it fun to disagree about such utterly subjective things? WWBITOTK? Today must be my day for responding to septic system questions...I responded to one on another forum. Anyway, I do have experience with wastewater treatment and disposal - environmental engineer for about 30 years now. The USEPA has a website dedicated to on-site wastewater treatment, since 1/4 of all US homes have an on-lot system. Here is an excerpt from one of their septic system user guides for homeowners: "Eliminating the use of a garbage disposal can reduce the amount of grease and solids entering the septic tank and possibly clogging the drainfield. A garbage disposal grinds up kitchen scraps, suspends them in water, and sends the mixture to the septic tank. Once in the septic tank, some of the materials are broken down by bacterial action, but most of the grindings have to be pumped out of the tank. Using a garbage disposal frequently can significantly increase the accumulation of sludge and scum in your septic tank, resulting in the need for more frequent pumping." As some have said, you can use a garbage grinder with a septic system - just use it wisely and perhaps you will have to pump out your septic tank more frequently than others. If you perform routine septic system maintenance, that might not even be an inconvenience, since that means you are doing more than the average homeowner with a septic system anyway. I've always had a GD and I wouldn't want to be without one. Ours (even growing up) have never been smelly, and the few jams I've experienced personally or remember as a kid were easily taken care of with the hex key that comes with the GD. Turn the bolt thingy on the bottom of the GD and wha-la, no more jam. Super easy. We compost, but only veggies. And we don't eat a lot of meat so the meat that goes down our GD is small remains of fish or chicken. Like others, what we put down the GD are cereal remains, rice, pasta etc... Never any bones. Those don't grind up well and the sound is awful! I didn't even know there were disposals that you had to cover before using. I've always had the kind w/a switch. My kids have never stuck their hands down the drain, and I never did as a kid either, so I think if you make it clear not to, your kids will be fine.

There have been threads discussing this if you search. You might find other insight.... We have one GD at the clean-up sink and none at the prep sink. I don't really need the main sink one because of the septic + compost situation. (The GD was already included in our build, so I put it in the larger sink to leave room in the smaller sink's cabinet area.) If you truly do compost, I wouldn't worry about adding it. The only time I use the GD is when I think something (food related) might have fallen down in there.... maybe once a week. Now that I'm thinking about it, I should just put a strainer on that sink and eliminate that issue. :) My prep sink is 20", and I think it's a nice size.

Hi All - OP here. Let me clarify.

---- No room on the wall!

"You have to have a sump engineered into something like that too"

---- The Drain Pump (Liberty 404) is the "sump"

"And none of this will pass inspection."

---- Not being inspected :-)

"We cut concrete all the time to do just that."

---- Cannot cut thru concrete due to radiant heating tubing laid when the house was built.

"Pumping up into the attic and back down?"

--- No, not to attic. Drain Pump is going to pump water from Prep Sink about 7 feet horizontally, then up about 1 foot vertically to meet the drain from the Main Sink.

Still open to comments and suggestions. And photos if you have them!

So the pipe is going to be above the floor between the island and the main kitchen area? Or when you say island you mean peninsula? Do you have photos of your space as well as plans for what you are trying to accomplish?

- No. The floor between the island and main sink is brick, so we will be lifting the brick and laying the pipe there. (And no, I mean island, not peninsula)

Again, I know this is not to code. I was just wondering if someone had done such a thing and had photos of their under-sink install to see what it might look like with both garbage disposal and drain pump. Thank you.

If you have a septic system, you must live in a rural region, which means you have a large yard. If you don't abuse the septic system or waste disposal, you won't have any problems. I was implying in the first statement about the yard that you should have a compost place for food leftovers. Most things will be eaten by critters at night, and things like old veggies will compost organically.

The garbage disposal is fantastic for scraping plates and such, but trash-bound leftovers should be returned to nature. Putting everything down the garbage disposal will most likely cause the septic system to overflow.
