Thanks boys & girls. Mucky_H2O+, yeah... those are rope lights and I really like the look it gives. There are rope lights in the play area as well which gives a really nice soft glow. As my buddy and I were installing these lights, I jokingly asked him why a 3 year old needed "mood lighting"?!?! Then as we were wrapping up, the little guy shows up after taking a bath in a robe.... Hugh Hefner style. It was hillarious. I don't think the conventional rope lighting puts out enough lumens for reading. You certainly don't want to ruin their eyes at such a young age. They now have LED rope lights which are MUCH brighter and may be just the ticket for you. Nappy, you Sir ain't right. LOL! :-)

You don't have to travel to the store to buy furniture out of state. Simply choose the piece you want from your local store, then contact the out of state store to order.I shop out of state stores all the time. I have purchased a Baker bed, Kindel dining room set, 2 Hickory Chair night tables, a Century sofa, 2 Wildwood lamps, Bernhardt bed, Hekman coffee table, $16,000 worth of Fabrica carpet and I have never had a problem. Everything I have purchased out of state was a lot less than the quoted prices I received locally. The Hickory Chair night tables were $2,150 each locally, and I paid $1,350 each from Boyles. My bed was just over $9,000 locally, and I paid $7,500 at Boyles. My sofa was $4,500 locally, and I paid $2,800 at Boyles. My coffee table was $900 locally, and I paid $458 at Boyles. My son's bed was $1,200 locally, and I paid $990 at Boyles. My mattress set was $2,600 locally, and I paid $2,100 (including tax and delivery). Boyles has to collect tax, but I would have paid tax locally anyway. Plus, I would have paid more tax as the cost was higher at home. My local store charges $130 per hour to deliver. Boyles charges me a flat rate and on some items, I received free delivery. You just have to make sure you are dealing with reputable stores. I only use Boyles in Hickory, NC, Carpets of Dalton in Dalton, GA for carpets. The recommendation for Carpets of Dalton came from this web site. Before you order, ask about their return policies, how they handle damaged or defective furniture, and how payment is made. Some stores only take credit cards for the deposit with the balance due by check when the furniture is ready for delivery. As soon as the furniture arrives, have the piece unwrapped outside and examine every inch of it before you let them bring it inside. And I mean go over every inch of it. Do this whether you buy it locally or out of state...and make sure you follow the stores instructions to the "T" in regard to damage and defect procedures. That includes noting all and any problems on the delivery documents...both the stores documents and the delivery service. Boyles examines the furniture before it leaves the warehouse, but I still examine it and they tell you to examine it upon arrival. Another think I like about Boyles is they also clean any fingerprints and dust off after they bring it inside. They also put it where you want it placed. I really like their customer service. Almost all stores--both local and out of state, will attempt to repair a piece of furniture, before they replace it. It is a matter of course. But make sure you know how they plan to handle damage. I have a Hancock and Moore sofa, chair, and ottoman on order with Lexington Furniture in Lexington, KY right now. I cannot comment as to their delivery service, but I hear their D&D service is not so great, so I requested they use Sun Delivery. It will cost me more, but the price savings from buying through Lexington is more than $900 less than Boyles and $1,500 less than my local store...plus no 8.5% sales tax. So the extra $100 to have Sun Delivery is ok with me. That is not to say that I do not shop locally. I just purchased $9,500 in furniture from my local store. I could have gotten it for less out of state, but the saleswoman worked with me for so long that I felt it was only right to buy from her. Beware of Rose Furniture and Blacks in NC. They are hit and miss. These stores delivery a lot of damaged furniture and are not easy to work with to have the problem resolved. But some people swear by them...

These posts are great info for merits of how to decide whether upholstery makes sense (cents)... then you have the emotional attachment to furniture pieces you want to keep added into the mix We bought armchairs more than 30 yrs ago when we lived in Houston and paid what a friend thought was a lot of money--I think they were maybe 200 a chair back then but memory at my age is like of iffy... We kept them--they were very comfortable higher-backed reading type chairs...had an ottoman too...but they got kind of tattered over the years and moved to the back bedrooms and eventually a storage facility--but never gave them up... They were redone when we moved into current house--one plus ottoman in Ikat type fabric for downstairs guest bedroom and one in solid slub-type for upstairs bedroom...and to my way of thinking I couldn't have bought chairs that were more comfortable --so cost was consideration but not deciding factor--- I have 4 mate's chairs w/two different shades of vinyl upholstery that I am holding on to that my husband had from a prior business office. I want to recover with Sunbrella fabrics for vacation house in FL and paint their wood glossy white. They are a great, comfortable low-back chair for a dining table... But getting them to FL is the problem... I might try to redo them myself because I think the seats' webbing/support is in good shape for most part...but the curves are tricky... I have done simple dining room chair seats before and even done another lounge chair when I didn't really care how it looked and just stapled the material over the existing as I went... I find it always so interesting that Sarah Richardson--the Canadian designer on HGTV--is always shopping for used furniture for most of her decorating jobs or recovering pieces the homeowner might have... Last show I watched they picked a chair for a nursery off the street--had it recovered, added a rocking/swivel base vs original legs, and added height to the back....Tommy did a sniff test but when you are taking off all but the frame I don't know what different it made how it smelled...just open the windows in the SUV... That show replays April 2 from info on HGTV site interesting because they went with a safari theme for baby's room How that labor and materials came out cheaper than buying a swivel-glider at Toys R Us I don't know...but free is pretty cheap to start with... The one factor you need to consider IMO getting something off Craigs List or dumpster diving is bedbugs-- they love soft furnishing and can hide in cracks of upholstery for months w/o being deterred from their mission of blood sucking... Anything questionable I would pass on unless you plan to strip ALL material from frame and start anew--and do it away from your house and bag all of it for disposal right away... Yes. It has been the WORST experience of my entire life. The reviews warned that the shippers they use in Georgia were putting their forklifts through the boxes and ripping the couch. We should have trusted the reviews. So you guessed it. A forklift ripped through our box and ripped the bottom of the couch open in two places. One of the holes is bigger than a human head. And the ripped open couch was actually the best part of my nightmare experience with this company. We contacted the company to see how they would make this right. Well...good luck getting through to anyone. That took forever, and 2 different customer service reps actually hung up on us. The first time they called back immediately. The second time I guess the supervisor was like "eh...not calling them back hahaha". The guy who hung up on us twice first offered to ship another couch with the same company that ruins the couches (a problem this company has known about for a long time and done nothing to fix). So we weren't interested in breaking our backs again only to see another couch torn open by a forklift. So then he offered us $100 back for a couch torn open that we just paid a ton for...so that was a no. Then he offered $200 back. That still seemed ridiculous when the couch was torn open. So as we were waiting for him to pretend to talk to someone to give him permission to give us a reasonable partial refund, he hung up on us and NEVER called back. Wow. Ok. So then my husband called back AGAIN to try to get the $200 guy to finish this nightmare experience with this company and give us the $200. But apparently no one can find this mystery man even though he was the "supervisor". So then we get a robotic super passive aggressive woman who continues to repeat that we can return the couch or she can give us a $50 credit on one of their other products. Like we would EVER spend a penny with this rude company again. Truly the problem isn't even the torn couch at this point. The problem is that they don't care. Not only don't they care, they won't even PRETEND to care. I have never had such an awful experience with ANY company in NY entire 51 years alive one this earth. Run! Do not become the next victim of their complete disregard for their customers. I seriously cannot BELIEVE how they handled this and how we were treated. Worst. Experience. Ever.
