Grass on neighboring yards with fence

My neighbor's yard crew does not use a string trimmer along the fence line. They cut the grass with a ride mower up to the fence and leave it at that. Because of this the grass on there side started to get very tall in a way. When I would put my foot through the slat of the fence it would sink, over time this "tall grass" has come on to my side of the fence as well and when its being mowed its hard to get through it. Does this make sense? When I was just walking the fence line too in some areas its very squishy wet deep when i walk, as you can really sink into it. This is also a swale area for our property and it runs down the back of our homes to a retention area, so I am assuming the ground is wearing away and the grass is kind of covering up this issue. What can I do to try and repair the grass on my side of the fence? Scalp it close to the fence line? But some grass killer on my side of the fence? Not sure what to do here. We are currently doing our own grass for 2 weeks now as we got rid of our landscaper since they were not doing an overall good job with maintaining the property.Thank you!

So this is St Augustine which has received far too much water and developed a fungal disease.

Where do you live? Have you been getting hurricanes this season?

What is your watering schedule? How long and how often do you water?

As for soil erosion, no, that's not what's going on. It's the overwatering that is causing the squishy problem. If you don't want grass crowding the fence, then spray the fenceline with RoundUp. That should kill the grass on both sides.

I would recommend against spraying and killing any amount of the neighbor's lawn. At least without getting their permission first. And even then there is the possibility that after they see how ugly it will look they will claim afterward you did not accurately represent what you were proposing.

The only lasting resolution to this impractical pairing of metal fence that reaches to near the ground at a thousand different places and lawn is to separate the two. By having a bed in front of the fence instead of grass coming right up to and into the fence.

Right now not much is in bloom. It has been so cloudy for a couple of weeks. But ordinarily the ones in the first two rows do much better. Also when I dig in, I notice the area along the fence is drier even if it receives the same amt. of water. Thanks for your help. Nancy

Not to be a total curmudgeon, BUT... 1) It's not your fence. It belongs to your neighbor 100% because he paid for it. That means you can't paint it, grow anything on it, or attach anything to it. 2) You don't have 6 more inches. That belongs to him, too! It's where the posts for his fence are. The fence is built entirely on his property! This isn't like buying a new house and the fence is on the property line: he paid for it and put it on HIS property. The property line appears to be where the wall is. The property line didn't move! (And no, he didn't "abandon" the 6" on her side, he's using it for the fence foundation.)

I shouldn’t laugh, but growing up in the country, farms amd confinements could be miles away and you’d never get away from it. Then add in the manure spreaders working on every field in the entire Midwest, I don’t know if that vent would warrant a second glance. Maybe they’re pot smokers. Pot smells burny/plasticy at times, and talk about a smell that lingers. We’ve been driving down the street with the windows down and my husband will point at a house and say ”they’re smoking dope in there”. Or walking down the street, he can tell which house it’s coming from.

Prariemoon - it was a couple lawn/yard guys who cuts grass and trims hedges. They really cleaned it up and out so I’m half expecting them to return and at least put down mulch in the flower beds or the weeds will be back in no time. There’s now a nice long border to fill - open space that if it were mine to fill i would plant with annabelle or incredibelle hydrangeas. I may offer her some cuttings….

Maybe I've lived in the country too long with no close neighbors. Embothrium makes excellent points. However, if the neighbor has St Augustine and you have a bed, then you still have a problem with his grass encroaching.
