Could use help with Cercidiphyllum japonicum (Katsuratree) from seed

Has anybody grown Cercidiphyllum japonicum (Katsuratree) under fluorescent lights?

The seed I bought has a low claimed viability. So, I started 6 6" pots with 4 seeds each. After 2 weeks. I had 3 tiny seedlings growing under 8-bulb T5 fluorescent lights about 4' L x 2' W and 2' above the surface.

I didn't water them one day, and one of them died. Since then I have watered them everyday. One has developed a white haze on the surface of the soil.

Of the 2 left both got a second set of leaves. The leaves came in slightly reddish. I assumed they'd get greener like the others. They didn't. I moved the lights closer--about 18" away. The leaves continued to turn red. Now all the leaves on both seedlings are turning red. Except for one spot on one of the red leaves that turned green.

Was my light too far away to begin with? What might I do differently when I try again?
