If I had 22k BTU burners and a cast iron pan to play with, I doubt my steaks would ever see a broiler! That said, I wouldn't want to be without a broiler. I don't use it so much to actually cook a meal, but I use it a ton to "finish" a dish such as a casserole, gratin, etc. Obviously you don't though, as you haven't found the need to do that in over a year. Your choice. Personally I'd hate to have a $$$ range that doesn't work right. In my reading about BS over the years I've seen a recurring theme: Few repair services seem to want to work on them, so Prizer is helpful in sending out parts and walking you through fixing it yourself. In the end that saves you a buck and gives you a sense of accomplishment. ;) Go for it!

The Capital Culinarian is the favored choice these days. Lots of info about it on this forum. I can personally recommend the DCS range - I've had it for nearly 10 years and am very pleased. Except for a few minor service calls during the warranty period, no service needed since then and have not had to replace the ignitors. The current DCS range is slightly different than mine - a few smaller burners and is now made by Fisher Paykel. There are some recent owners of this range who also seem pleased. The big difference between the DCS and Bluestar or CC is that it has dual-stacked sealed burners. I've been quite pleased by them - they get sufficienty hot for me to stir fry and I find them easy to clean - but what I really like is that each burners has a separate simmer burner which simmers incredibly low. I find I use the burners on lower settings far more often than I crank them up.

Lehman's in Ohio carries a lot of different appliances etc. for off grid living. Most of the Amish do not have electricity. They are wonderful to work with and have a high level of customer service. I would e-mail or talk with them. I'm betting they can set you in the right direction. They have a grreat website. If you have your heart set on a Bluestar there should be a dealer somewhere that would be interested enough to help. I understand about the watt concern...we've set ourselves up for partial off grid living and hope to be totally free of it at some point in the near future. We'll stay hooked into the grid for back up though. During a long power outage from a hurricaine we lived with a small generator. It becomes a balancing act where we shut something off (like the fans or lights) while we took a shower because of the electrical load when the well pump kicked on. I'm assuming once the burners of a Bluestar are lit you can keep running them without electricity. My GE Profile burners can be lit with a match, so while I couldn't bake I could still make a lot of delicious meals without the oven. I truly hope the Bluestar burners can be manually lit with a match during power outages because we get a lot of them.

yes have electric 3 yrs old & propane fueled 7 yrs old in different homes. no issues w doors (except to adapt to left closing). both perform well. electric more bells whistles being newer.. digital and pizza stone. however on advice on tech (we had 1 svc call for faulty thermostat ez repair but they pulled entire panel and replaced), pizza stone carefully removed, stored. this way oven heats and cools faster. note that neither throws excessive heat into space. trade off is a fan running to aid slow deliberate cool down. this might annoy in an open space eat in kitchen. our fan friendly oven is installed in walk in pantry utility room that houses freezer and extra refrig (main kitchen has 30" Leibherr)
