Has anyone ver grown a Mango tree up north?
Comments (44)Mike, Unfortunately I have to start over with my ice cream banana because i left it out in the cold. I'm currently moving and might try with a metal halide indoors. While we're on the subject of tropicals though I have a miracle fruit (Synsepalum dulcificum) in Al's 5-1-1 by a window with a cfl which is currently flushing yet again. It initally dropped all its leaves back in march but its come all the way back. Hopefully I'll get some fruit from it soon. I also have a second one of these trees- I put it in the 5-1-1 but with Sphagnum instead of peat. It dropped all its leaves and has done nothing at all for the past 3 months. The moss is very slow to dry but I hear these love water so I don't know whats wrong with this one. Maybe it needs humidity indoors to get it kick started. If anyone would know, i'd love to hear. I'm anxious to try growing some citrus this summer. -Greg...See MoreHas anyone grown Morning Glories in containers?
Comments (4)Thanks folks. I'm a relative newbie to flowers, good to know: 1) They will grow in containers 2) They don't like fertilizer 3) They appear to grow better in containers/container soil I got one from Stpetefla last year, moved it out of gray sand it was in and into a potting mix for a few months, then planted it in the ground in the one gallon of potting mix I had it in and it really took off. By contrast all three I planted from seed in the ground three weeks ago are barely growing, and the bugs have already found them. I think I need to start another batch in potting mix.... Here are a few pictures of the one that got me started, and why I'm interested in them...these are not the best pictures, this plant is loaded with flowers. Comments (10)I have a single female that I planted perhaps ten years ago. It has required no care at all, and while we don't see 100+ degrees here on the Chesapeake Bay, high humidity is ours 9 months it has fruited amply for about 6 years. The vine has a bushy lot in the first 3 feet and is 20 feet up my radio tower. It's a little over 3/4" in diameter. I have propagated it quite easily by seed and cuttings. Stuck 'em in the ground and they grew (seeds) and rooted cuttings and then transplanted them. The fruit gets about the size of holly berries, it actually twines around my Scarlet Goumi berry bush, and has to be constantly pointed in the right direction. The seeds are about the size of a small grape seed and there are one and sometimes two per fruit. (I wouldn't advocate eating the seeds). The pulp in each berry is minimal and I've only used them for eating out of hand. The flavor is quite dramatic (per berry) and the taste is certainly tart, bordering on slightly bitter although I don't find it unpleasant at all. I don't seem to have any insect pests that have interest in the vines (or the fruit) and for that matter, only minimal interest from the bird community. jccampb...See MoreDisplaying silly stuff in my new grown-up office
Comments (24)Wow, yeah definitely frame the hunky Aztecs. Love your space and maybe you have given me the incentive to update my home office/guest bedroom. When I was working and had a real honest to goodness grownup office, I had a collection on banana stickers on one wall. I'd have a banana with lunch and stick the sticker on the wall. I became a banana sticker connoisseur. I tried to buy my bananas at out of the way mom and pop stores because they tended to have bananas from more exotic sources than regular grocers. One day someone stuck an apple sticker on the wall. I spotted it immediately and unstuck the interloper. After a while, the whole wall was covered with banana stickers. I worked there a long time. Funny how we decorate our work spaces. Mine have always just kind of grown without a plan....See More- 3 years agolast modified: 3 years ago
