Has anyone grown Morning Glories in containers?

So, now my tomato cages and bunkers are empty. I'm looking for vining/flowering container plants to put in the bunkers with my 8' tomato cages for the summer. I put a Skyvine and solanum wendlandii in two of the bunkers but I still have space for what ever I want to add, scaled down from 70 bunkers to 50 and have 9 x 8' tomato cages just sitting barren for the summer.

I have Morning Glories growing up the supports to my arbor but they are planted in the ground. I have two additional varieties I have not started because I don't have a place to put them, unless I can grow them in containers with my tomato cages for support. Has anyone done this.?

In reviewing other flowering vines that will grow in a container here's my short-list for Zone 10; mandevilla, coral honeysuckle, winter jasmine and bleeding heart, although I've read that bleeding heart prefers shade and the back yard garden is predominantly full sun....

Any and all comments are welcome and appreciated.

A few years ago I grew Morning Glories in an old fashioned teakettle. I punched some holes in the bottom for drainage, put in some coarse compost and added topsoil(Walmart)and Black Kow to fill it. Watered to soak soil, when partially dry, put in seeds(Burpee Heavenly Blue)and some wire for them to climb on. Watched them grow and bloom. It worked great.

Tom FYI they don't like to be fertilized or they will never flower. You can after they get going a bit to encourage them.

I plant them right in the compost piles I make in the garden. They soil is fine for them. The next year I plant tomatoes or peppers. Then compost. Then next year plant leeks and garlic with failing results. Then plant tomatoes or peppers with great success. Then repeat. Although I haven't added sand to the garden in along time. So that may be the problem, but I don't think so. The compost soil is very loose just like sand. But still has anyone grown garlic and leeks in a container with great success, because I have a neighbor that grows Swiss chard, cucumber, and lettuces in pots with great success even though they plant right in the ground. They grow them close to the house because itÂs more efficient for them then to tear up there lawn.

Can morning glory and moonvine be grown this way?

I really have a lot of space (clay dirt), but I took out my above ground pool this spring and a small portion of deck that lead to the pool. There was a support post for the edge of the decking that I left in the ground to fashion a trellis. I planted moonvine (for evening appeal) and supposed to be Milky Way MG (for day/morning). I probably over-planted, but I do like the effect. Next year, I'll plant the moonvine on the wine trellis instead of mandevilla. I drilled holes in the post every 18 in or so (took some muscle and a ladder for me), sawed up and old broom stick into 20 in lengths and secured the broom sticks in the drilled holes with a screw. I used some small wire and started working my way up, looping the wire around the broom sticks. I think I put 2 or 3 wires on each side of the post. I saw this done at a commercial pond place, they planted clematis last year and mg, it was lush and full. The had a nice "topper" on theirs, I put a gargole on mine and he's now stuck in the vines (blown into them from a storm). I noticed this year, they didn't plant the mg, and the clematis is creeping. I'm sure it will look much better next year. Hope some of you can utilize my post idea to your advantage.-B

Wow! Such beautiful flowers, thanks for the pictures everyone! My aunt told me if I grew morning glories or black-eyed susans in my garden I would be growing them forever because they reseed all over like crazy. I always avoided them as a result of that. I'd love to grow some in pots though on the front porch, and now that I have a cloner I could probably grow more of whatever I ended up liking best. I saw a picture of some japanese varieties like "Kikyo snowflake" and "blue silk" that are awesome looking. Do you think if I grow these as annuals in an area that is all mulch aside from pots, but does have lawn right nearby, that reseeding would be an issue? It rains hard here in two seasons, and spring grows so fast it's shocking, so I've been worried about growing stuff that could end up with some kind of kudzu-like jungle in my suburban front lawn. :-) PJ

Hi Ronoldjohn, I had never heard of that so I googled it, and it looks like it might work here along the Front Range. I have morning glories growing up one of those pre made trellis's with the planter on the side. They seem to be doing great. In fact I planted some in the planter and some in the ground at the same time. The ones in the planter have already made they way over the trellis and are full of flowers. The ones I put in the ground are less than 6 inches tall.

Thanks folks. I'm a relative newbie to flowers, good to know:

1) They will grow in containers
2) They don't like fertilizer
3) They appear to grow better in containers/container soil

I got one from Stpetefla last year, moved it out of gray sand it was in and into a potting mix for a few months, then planted it in the ground in the one gallon of potting mix I had it in and it really took off. By contrast all three I planted from seed in the ground three weeks ago are barely growing, and the bugs have already found them. I think I need to start another batch in potting mix....

Here are a few pictures of the one that got me started, and why I'm interested in them...these are not the best pictures, this plant is loaded with flowers.
