Gas Fireplace Brands
Comments (2)We have a Jotul direct vent gas insert. They are made in Norway and assembled in New England somewhere. We're very pleased with it. If you go with a direct vent system, which is the most fuel efficient (those that are not direct vent send most of the heat up the chimney), make sure you get the remote thermostat, which is usually an option at extra cost. But it's worth the money because it keeps the temperature steady. Unfortunately, Consumer Reports does not rate the brands of these system, although they do publish an article of general advice about them. I would go with a brand that has been around for a while that makes a unit that you like the appearance of. The other thing to consider is the competence of the installer. Some of these things are a bit complicated, and you want an installer you can really have confidence in. The only way to identify a good installer is to ask around. The other thing to consider is the local building codes. You want to make sure you are not in violation....See MoreBasement remodel--choose gas fireplace or more windows or tiny wet bar
Comments (24)I'm in Canada, so I completely understand that a basement FP would get used. The problem is that it's pretty hard to do any fireplace that isn't personalized. There are so many options for stone/brick/tile facades, mantels, hearths, etc, that it's either going to be really "you" or really boring. And it usually becomes a large design element in the room. Even the location of the FP can be a personalized choice. For some reason, developers here love to put basement FPs in corners here. And I don't know a designer anywhere who thinks that's a good idea. But obviously someone likes it. That's not to say you shouldn't do a fireplace. It's your house, and you've got another 10 years there, so enjoy it. My point is that even if everyone wants a fireplace, not everyone is going to love YOUR fireplace. The gas fireplace in my new house will be in the dining room. Oh, the looks and comments I get!! "But, the fireplace GOES in the living room!" Where it competes with the TV as a focal point. No, thanks. And most of these people don't even know that I'm doing brick rather than stone or tile. I'm sure their heads would explode. :)...See MoreNeed opinions linear gas fireplaces
Comments (1)Valor makes great fireplaces, but the L1 doesn't work too well on propane. If you have natural gas, you should be fine. I am not familiar with the Enviro unit, but we handle Fireplace Xtrordinair, Mendota, Majestic, White Mountain Hearth, Napoleon, Sierra Flame, Valor, Astria (used to be Lennox), Town & Country and a number of others. I can give you some relative advice on what they have, particularly if you are looking for certain features. If you're trying to hit a lower price point, you might want to look into Sierra Flame. They have some nice-looking but price-conscious linears available....See MoreWhat no-glass vertical vent gas fireplace brands are good?
Comments (6)Agree with @cpartist Just install a zero clearance wood burning fireplace and install a gas log. You will end up with a much more realistic fire, are able to choose from far more log options and can always convert it to burn real wood in the future, which is good for resale. Superior has some great looking models: https://superiorfireplaces.us.com/product-category/wood-burning-fireplaces/ You will need to check your local building codes since wood burning fireplaces are not allowed in some places...and glass doors may be required, but you can always remove them once you pass code. Same goes for gas fireplaces, the glass may be required in your city. FYI: Here's a link to the gas logs and other fires that we supply once you get the fireplace installed: https://www.hansenwholesale.com/gas-logs/venting-type/vented Or, more contemporary alternatives to gas logs: https://www.hansenwholesale.com/gas-logs/gas-fire-alternatives...See MoreThe Design Doula
