Help picking out the color of our entertainment center

We'll be moving into a new home soon and my husband and I can't decide what color entertainment center would be best. The living room and kitchen are open to each other. There are dark hardwood floors in the living room and the kitchen has a beige/gray mix tile with medium brown cabinets. The eating area off of the kitchen also has dark hardwood floors. All of the walls will be painted a light gray color. Our existing couches which we don't plan on replacing for a few years is a dark brown leather. We also have a glass top with espresso color bottom coffee table and side tables but we're willing to part with those in the event they clash with the entertainment center. Any suggestions on what would look best?

What type of entertainment center?? They are really outdated/ A TV console would be much better. Where do you plan to put TV - between windows or on solid wall?

We plan on putting it on the solid wall. I agree and think they're outdated. My husband is still a fan so that's also part of the debate.

Thank you for your input everyone! I feel much better now about the woods to mix in. I don't like the thought of all black furniture. The como bench is on sale.....I may have to purchase it! yayagal, unfortunately, we have floor to floor carpet. In our area, it seems it is the norm to put that in the living areas. Of course, all of the shows and magazines have hardwood...I would love them! My husband thought it was weird to put hardwood in the living room....he wanted it to be cozy under the feet. That is how most people here think! One day I will have my way! Thanks again!

What a difference with the lights on! That's terrific. I would leave the airplane on the right where it is and center under the light, all by itself. I would move the bi-wing plane to the top shelf, though I'd stack some "coffee table" books underneath it to give it the appropriate height. Keep the clock on the side of a short stack of books. Use an object in front of other books and get a decorative book end to highlight another stack. Use the depth of the bookcases to your favor by placing some objects in front of others so your arrangement becomes 3-d. Something like this... I made the center arrangement with strict symmetry given the bookcases and the lights, but you can easily do a more asymmetric or casual arrangement if you want. I used a woven basket and ceramics to add color and texture, but those are just suggestions...there are many ways you can go with it. Note too that the blue and red in the objects are repeated in the book spines. When making your arrangement, think about scattering similar colors around to tie it together.

Get a sample of BM smokey taupe, it's a wonderful tone to live with and it flatters dark floors and light floors. I have it through out my home, I had steamed milk which was nice but this is better. For my bedroom I had them mix it a tad bit lighter. It's so cozy feeling.

Here's what the area looks like now. I kept the angle for the TV to avoid ceiling and floor repair. After priming the new drywall, I liked the white walls, so I painted the family room white. The TV is 82". I'd like to add a faux beam to the top of the opening someday in the future. The framing and drywall was done by Sullivan Builders, Canyon Lake, TX.

I agree, in general, back in the day, we needed 24” or more deep large furniture to house the depth of those TVs. I am sure you now have a flatscreen TV, and know that they are recommended for best viewing, at eye level for a seated audience. Additionally, all the new TVs pride themselves on ability to be viewed from an angle. A deep entertainment center doesn’t take advantage of this, either.

Maybe your husband is just so accustomed to seeing a massive piece of furniture, and can’t imagine anything else. Perhaps if someone mocks up a display of a long, low console, with lots of storage, placement of art or whatever to make it attractive, he will come around.

Several of the [pros on here recommend IKEA's Besta system. You can get many components to give the look of an entertainment center but more modern looking
