I don't know anything about tv installation, but if this place were mine I'd look into a way to install it so that it sticks out with one of those tv fixtures that you can move around.

Most of the time, on here, we say the tv is way too high to view nicely. In your case, its a bit too low to view comfortably. I would drywall that lower opening up and put a nice tv stand there, and get your tv up at a proper viewing height. You could even do a white stand to match in with your trim.

Thanks for all the comments. Yes, I would like the TV to be higher. I still have the problem of the opening being too small. I'm now thinking I could put the TV where the shelves are (demolish the shelves and the corner area) and install something new.

It might be a better idea to actually know the dimensions of the larger TV before doing construction work.

My first thought had been to suggest putting the TV in the shelf area but I think furniture layout would be difficult compared to where it is now. Post a floor plan on the room so comments can be made about furniture placement

loobab, Our current TV is 57 inches wide, and the opening is 53 inches wide.

I'm conflicted about the variation between the arched windows and the architectural arches over the wall installations. If you have the budget, I would close up all arches, the TV opening and the shelf opening. New drywall and pre-wiring the shelf area for a new high def TV to be wall mounted on an articulated arm will make a huge difference in your room.
