My kitchen is going through a big change tomorrow

Tonight I have taking down all the stuff on my walls and the curtains and tomorrow the walls are changing! For the last 15 years my walls have been a dark red and tomorrow a primer will go on and then on Sunday a color called Wool Skein is going up. I'm getting rid of some of my decorations that I have above the cabinets. Tonight I put Old English on by cabinets just to make them look a little better. I'm going to get some knobs and pulls after the painting is done. I will take some before and after pics.

Your kitchen would look bigger and brighter than before with Wool Skein color. Waiting for the pics. :-)

Thanks for the replies, but I'm going to have to challenge a few questions. 1) PPBenn/KathyN: It is definitely feasible to move the stove to the 101 1/2" wall - I appreciate that point. I could perhaps only do base cabinets and the range along this wall. If I only added a range hood, I wouldn't see a huge impact in price, without wall cabinets. I could keep the peninsula then. 2) Based on everyone's recommendation, I'll go with a 36" fridge. 3) Live Wire: If I make this an "L" shape, I lose the bar seating, with is a top priority for me. I want a dine-in area in the kitchen. Also, if I go with an "L" shape, I would either have to put the fridge on the window wall, or put the stove and fridge on the window wall. Please advise. Also, assuming the same setup as proposed, I could make the corner cabinet 36". If the fridge is 36", I'm left with an awkward 6" of leftover space. I could make the cabinet which houses the return 18", but this pushes the fridge more against the corner.

Blackchamois, its not oyster gray, but I think that grout color could be fantastic in another kitchen. Actually I know it would be fantastic, bc when I started looking for grout, its the color I wanted (ended up being too dark gray for my kitchen). I'm attaching the pic I first saw with it and the link of the kitchen. I really think its beautiful inthe right kitchen. My tiles are daltile, which have self spacers in them. You can find them in home depot (I had to special order my color)...they're made in the USA (except for the bullnose ones which are made in Mexico) Here is a link that might be useful: oyster grey

Personally, I'd rather let my house out for a lower rate than put out the expense to update a functional and clean kitchen. OP mentioned spending up to $10,000 on updates. Even charging $300/month more than an un-improved home it will still be 3 years (at least, assuming s/he isn't paying interest on a loan for that renovation) before that money is made back. That's 3 years of lost investment opportunity on that money and also the lost chance to provide a desperately needed resource: safe, affordable housing. If a loan was needed it will be even longer, as interest will be paid on the loan. Beside that is the hassle of dealing with contractors, potentially taking time to interview and consult with designers, choosing fixtures and all the drama there, and the inevitable delays every renovation faces. In other words, when you're figuring out the cost-benefit breakdown of renovating before renting be sure to include your time, energy, and other investment opportunities in the "cost" column. And as a personal note from someone whose family relied on less glamorous, lower priced rental stock for our housing needs please if anyone is reading this with the same dilemma consider keeping the nice, functional, clean kitchen in its un-improved state and let it out for less. It might make all the difference to a family in need. Do like suzyq53 above and replace and update as need arises rather than to bring it up to current trends. Ok, stepping off my soapbox now...

Thank you, Karen. We actually have a 50% chance of rain on Thursday and Friday. As much as I want the rain, those are the two days Ingrid and I are hoping to get together. We’ve set a date several times now, and something always prevents it from happening at the last minute, either on her end or mine. Every time they predict rain lately, we don’t get any. I have a funny feeling we might get it this time, just because Ingrid and I have plans:) We sure need it, though. Like I said, I’ll take what I can get. It will be so nice and light! Yes, pictures would be great. By the way, if you ever plan to have your cabinets painted, don’t use wax or Pledge on them.

Can't wait to see the pictures! I'm in the middle of painting my kitchen. My daughter started it and then they had to brace the new porch roof and took out some drywall in the kitchen to do it, so waited for them to fix that. Now I have too much to do outside before the weather turns.

That's the color of some of my kitchen cabinets. The others are a light moss green. Mixture of colors and traditional cabinet styles..shaker and raised panel. Walls white .Years ago I painted my living room red and got gasps from my mother in law. Put before and after shots. It's fun to change.

I had a cranberry red in my kitchen for a while. The only painted areas are the soffits and one large arched doorway. It really popped. The cabinets were beige.
