Hi DIY Experts,

I've been replacing weathered siding on my house and now what's left is high up on my chimney It's about 25' to the top. I've been reading about scaffolding and lifts. I'd like to use a scissor lift like the GS-1930, but it weighs 3400 lbs and all I have near that chimney is unleveled dirt. I've also looked at some booms like the one Home Depot rents, a JLG T350. That boom might require me to take out a tree and I'd have to have some of it in the street I think. The scissor lift looks best to me, but not sure how to prepare the ground to safely use it? My thoughts were to just level it with a pick and shovel and add some gravel. Maybe throw a sheet of 3/4 plywood over it and make sure it doesn't budge. Does that sound like something you'd like to risk your life on? Maybe there is a more appropriate scissor lift for this job? What's the right way to do this job? Call in a construction company?

Hands down, go with the JLG lift! A telescoping lift is so much more usable than a scissors lift.

Uneven ground is easier to deal with (just build up pads under a couple legs), and the extendable boom and rotating bucket is so much easier to get into tight locations. You might have the lift on the sidewalk and/or street for a while, so maybe get some orange cones to set out to keep traffic aware of you working.

Awesome, thanks formulaross20! I can buy a lot of cones for the $8,000 a construction company is going to charge me! I agree the boom looks way more versatile and has the outriggers for leveling. My only reservation was having to have part of it in the street although it's residential with very little traffic. Home Depot sells a safety harness for it. I could use it over the attached the garage too for painting and repairs instead of putting a ladder on the roof. I'll probably have all the siding cut and ready to go to minimize the repair time. Any other suggestions safety or otherwise I really appreciate.

Wow! So many great veggies are being planted this year! I only have a tiny husky tomato plant that I bought from HD, this is my first go at veggie(don't have much space) so hopefully I'll have some good tomatoes soon! Dcat, great idea using those empty buckets you had on hand. I really need to think about what I have that I can utilize. :) Wow chinamon! Those have grown quite a bit! I've been thinking about using hydroton but not sure if I should. Seeing your plants and how well they have done makes me think I should go get some now! haha :) When you began your plants, did you put the seed in the hydroton and wait for it to germinate? Could you explain the process either in this post or in a private message. I've been hesitant because I don't want to loose my plants by novice mistakes. Haha Josh, its a shame about the garlic and your friends house cleaner threw it away. Some people see dirt and thinks its bad haha...on the contrary its super fresh! ;) Desert, a vineyard in containers!? Great idea! I can't wait to see how it does. Are you doing grapes? Ashley :)

Cl. Lady Hillingdon did beautifully in a previous also warm/hot garden and I have a young plant now which is bushy pretty much from the ground up, and I also seem to remember my previous one being bushier than the Reve d'Or that I had until recently. It was against a hot wall and was slowly perishing, but I would say it had a more open spreading habit than Cl. Lady Hillingdon. I love the colors on both but I would say Reve d'Or has a more subtle, muted shade.

Nobody makes what you are looking for. Chairs and stools are my specialty. What you are looking for doesn't exist. Don't even spend 2 seconds looking. Its a waste of time. So I'm going to save you a lot time. You'll need some Advil however. Make the designer pay to fix the desk. As a design professional, he/she should have known this would be a problem. The designer screwed up, the designer needs to make it right. Even if you cut down a barstool, it wouldn't be right, because your feet wouldn't touch the floor. It will always feel awkward. I don't care what it costs this designer, this was a stupid, stupid mistake that never should have happened. This person does not really know what they're doing. Mistakes like this separate the "pros" from the "posers." A desk should be 29-30" tall. Be persistent. The first response you'll get is "no" followed by a lot of blubber. At that point have a lawyer draw up a letter. If that doesn't do the job, take this person to small claims court. Then it will get done. Don't try to rationalize this away. This is an easy fix. Maybe not a cheap fix, but definitely easy. If you don't get it fixed, you'll be unhappy with it forever. And when you try to sell the house your buyers will look at the desk as a liability, something that will need to be fixed or replaced. Remember, a home buyer's first consideration is location, second is "how much do I have to do to this place?" Unless they're 6'6" tall they'll see the desk as something to be replaced. That's not good. So be strong, choose not to be a doormat, and don't take no for an answer. Let us know how it goes. I don't need to wish you good luck, because you don't need luck, just a little resolve. I will wish you well however, and wish for a speedy and painless resolution. Yes, the island could be lower. However, what you want is higher at the sink, and I think you could do that. You could raise the counter at the sink and on that entire wall. I would leave the lower height on the range/oven and refrigerator walls if the 36" standard height is OK to work at. However, if you want it lower for a Baking Center, you will probably have to move the under-counter oven elsewhere where the height is at least the standard. To accommodate the extra height, all except the corner cabinets could either be taller overall (ideal) or you could add "filler" b/w the top of the standard height cabinets and the counter. You will need to plan the "filler" to be sure it can support the weight of your countertop material. (Raising the cabinets by having a taller toekick area would not work b/c the toekicks really need to meet with the ones on the other runs, and they will be the standard height.) I would probably use the "filler" method for the last 12" where the leg of the corner susan cabinet would be on the sink side. Alternatively, but not recommended, you could put in a (taller) blind corner cabinet on the sink side and just have the cabinets on the range/oven side meet that blind corner cabinet (you may need some filler b/w them to allow all doors/drawers to open on both sides). Also note that a back ache can also be caused by having to lean too far in to reach the sink. If you have too big a piece in front of the sink b/w the edge of the counter & the edge of the sink, you may also experience back pain. Ditto for having to reach too far to get to the faucet/handles. I think an apron sink is probably the best type to get if you have back problems...you're right at the sink edge and no reaching back. But, most apron sinks are pretty deep, at least the ones I've seen. I would not separate the legs & base of the "U" into separate pieces w/floorspace b/w them...you would lose a lot of cabinet & counter space if you did that.

I've been up in electric and diesel JLG lifts several times, to do overhead speakers and power wiring in our church sanctuary, and LED upgrades to the parking lot and gymnasium lighting as well. Although OSHA requires the harness for (paid?) construction jobs, I have never climbed up on the edge of the bucket, nor would I ever want to, so I don't see the need for a harness. I see locating the lift in front of your chimney as in your lower picture. To get to the L & R chimney sides, you should be able to rotate the bucket 90 degrees (parallel to the boom, it's skinnier that way) and tuck in right up next to the chimney sides. Yeah, you might have to push a few branches back on that tree to the left, but I don't see the need to cut anything off for access. I also install a homebrew workbench on the lifts for tools and supplies. I extend the front and back top rail off one end of the bucket with 2x2's, held on with 4 hose clamps, and then put a piece of plywood across the 2x's. Shoot a few construction crews in, rim the top of the plywood with 2x's so things don't roll off and you got a workbench.

Never, ever skimp on safety equipment. Just because OSHA isn't likely to come knocking at your door does not mean that you shouldn't use any and all recommended fall protection equipment! The risk of a fall may be low, but the consequence could be deadly.

PLEASE rent a harness to use with whatever device you choose!

Thanks fr20 for the tip on the bucket rotation to get to the sides. I didn’t know it could do that! I haven’t got around to reading the user’s manual yet. I can’t imagine falling out either but I’ll probably wear one anyway for the times I can’t imagine. Debating on whether to get the permit or just rent it and do it:)
