Has anyone here actually knocked back cabinets from glossy to matte?
Comments (15)scrappy2, there's really not much to show. Any cell phone pic I'd post would look like an unfinished door. My stuff was stripped before I applied the paint base. I used exterior so it had all the weather and UV protection elements in it. Just figured it couldn't hurt. I did use latex, because it was inside. I'm thinking you could use a tougher, oil base for cabinets that get a lot of action. Now, I did do a credenza, which I sold. I scuffed the finish with a 220 sanding block, being careful to get into detail with an emery board. I then applied the paint base and boom. No shine. Smooooooth and beautiful. 2 coats. Water proof against glass condensation, etc. My person is still thrilled with it a year+ and I'm using it all the time. I also used it to glue chipping paint down without it looking gummy. Other top coats (even DecoArt's supposedly matte finish) leave a discernible shine. Haven't tried Modern Masters, when my paint base is so inexpensive. Anyway, the chips glue down without any hint of glue, or looking top coated. I don't know how to explain how it Doesn't look top coated! I'm considering scuffing (or even sanding hard) the unfinished cherry face frame and drawer fronts I got from The Cabinet Joint. I love them, but I polyacryliced them (not polyurethane!) and even the satin is just too shiny. I'm eyeing my can of paint base for them instead....See MoreHas anyone used this IKEA wall cabinet?
Comments (3)I don't think 3 drawers in a 15 inch wall cabinet will solve your problem, as you still won't have matching heights. I think the most inconspicuous option is the third one - to put the 80 inch pantry on a 6 inch base and then cover the gap with filler. There is no adjacent toekick so you won't even notice the difference....See MoreHas anyone used the Torhamn cabinet fronts from Ikea?
Comments (9)I have seen them in person, but at the time I was paying more attention to the function of the cabinets and their interior fittings. I agree that the chicken wire look of the glass cabinets is a bit unattractive, but I can see one benefit is that it makes it easier to arrange the shelves -- you don't have to match the shelves to the glass rails. The doors themselves do seem well made....I wonder if painting them would be possible, and maybe cheaper than buying something from Semihandmade ... It does seem a shame that there's not a plain wood shaker. Anyway, I'm familiar with the many companies offering fronts to Ikea cabinets, I was just interested in seeing real life pictures of THIS style. :) I put "Torhamn" in Instagram and came up with a handful of pictures from a couple. who have used that style in their kitchen renovation. It looks really nice! It works because they have very few uppers and their kitchen has beautiful light. The pattern doesn't seem overwhelming at all....See MoreIkea (Bodarp), Wren (Roman Leaf), Husk (Verde Brac on Ikea carcass)
Comments (4)We do tons of IKEA kitchens and I haven't used Bodarp yet. But I've examined the door closely in the store and I like it. If you're environmental-minded you will appreciate that it's made in factories using renewable electricity and the door intself is made of recycled PET bottles. There is a similarly-constructed IKEA door called Kungsbacka which I have used in my own house and it has held up beautfully so far....See MoreSuzanne Jones
