BEST and WORST roses for your soil and climate?
Comments (68)Bump up this thread. I hope to learn from Nippstress in zone 5, Nebraska with loamy soil & less rain. Nahema as own-root was wimpy in my dense & alkaline clay and refused to bloom unless tons of rain. While looking at Nippstress' old posts, I found that Nahema did well for her. Nippstress is in zone 5, same with me. However, my soil is heavy & dense black clay and roses that are wimpy for alkaline clay California are also wimpy in my soil, like own-root Felicia which died the minute I planted in my clay. Felicia is also wimpy for Debra in CA. Felicia has Trier (hybrid multiflora) as its parent, and multiflora doesn't like dense & compact & heavy clay. Multiflora is salt-sensitive and doesn't tolerate high pH like Dr.Huey-rootstock (my tap water pH is 9). Multiflora is a cluster root and can't push through rock-hard clay like big-fat-chunky Dr.Huey-rootstock, or vigorous own-roots with thick & woody roots. Below is multiflora-rootstock, note the thin cluster roots, NO WAY that can go through rock-hard clay which broke 2 of my shovels. The wimpiest rose in my garden was Comte de Chambord (grafted on multiflora), which was 1/3 the size of my 2 Comte as own-roots. Comte as own-root bloomed many times more than Comte grafted on multiflora. Comte own-root has thicker & woody roots that can produce acid to digest the hard minerals in my clay. Below is multiflora rootstock, note the thin cluster roots, similar to hardy snapdragon flowers: Compared that to below thick & chunky Dr.Huey stock (more like a tree's root). This is a 1st year Dr.Huey rootstock that decayed in my wet clay. I dug up older Dr.Huey (15-year-old) that spread out 4 feet in all directions, and went through my rock-hard clay better than my steel shovel:...See MoreGarden and health tips & Bush beauty & fertilizer for fast growth
Comments (26)I'm sure other brands have the same delicious flavors in de-caf. The best flavors of Decaf I tried (from other brands): 1) Dark French roast, de-caf. 2) De-caf with Caramel flavor (way better than pecan flavor). The Caramel flavor makes it a zero calories desert. Finally lost my winter-weight gain (was up to 125), now I'm 122 lb. My daughter graduated from high school this Tuesday 5/25/21, so NO MORE WAKING UP at 5:40 am to make breakfast for her. The lack of sleep really made me gain weight. The best tip I can give for pots is to give a few cups of water per day & enough to wet the pot, but NOT TO LEACH OUT nutrients. I was shocked when I saw 1/8 cup of whitish stuff oozing out of bottom of pot during heavy rain. I did a research on how much rain the "green" city like Seattle, WA gets: they have lots of rainy days, but just a tiny bit per day .. so roses there are much better than roses in Chicagoland when we have tons of rain in spring & fall, but drought & high temp. in July, August, Sept. Funny how I have to lime roses in spring, then use acidic gypsum to lower my tap-water at pH 9 in hot summer. Bush-shots taken today May 27 of roses in my zone 5 garden, fertilized with pH 8 biochar, pH 9 Garden lime, plus Acid-Lilly-miller NPK 10-5-4: 10th-year own-root Carding Mill gets my vote AS THE BEST BUSH BEAUTY. I lime it on purpose to UP the myrrh scent. Now its myrrh scent is just as wonderful as Mary Magdalene: 10th-year own-root Evelyn is my earliest bloomer in zone 5, gets my vote as the prettiest & glossy leaves. It's a lime hog & prefers alkaline. Scent is delicious with alkaline pH: Kim Rupert (Roseseek) creation: thornless Lynnie in less than 3 hours of sun, it's a 10th-year own-root. I neglected it for the past 10 years & rarely water it: 10th-year own-root Comte de Chambord's winter-kill was 6 inch. quite severe since it's on a raised bed. But thanks to Lilly Miller NPK 10-5-4 it shot up with lots of buds. All pics. taken 5/27/21:...See MoreWOW roses vs. boring roses?
Comments (77)Thank you straw and everyone for your photos and detailed info. I used to participate regularly here on this forum years ago, and then got rid of a lot of my roses. I have a lot of shade and I had a lot of jobs and no time and so I gave up on roses. I've found myself venturing over to this forum very hesitantly lol, lest I get sucked back in! But seriously I am thinking of adding a rose or 12 back to my garden, and I really appreciate some of the honest descriptions here (as well as the laughs - sitting here alone laughing out loud at some of them!). I know some of it is subjective, some depends on the zone or even the particular garden, but it's a starting point. Your photos are all gorgeous and Tina your garden is absolutely lovely! Thank you all for sharing! :) Dee Edited to say, I meant to thank Straw (and everyone who participated) for ALL the posts you've had recently, not just this one - so very much great info! Own root, roses for the vase, roses for your climate, in ground vs. in pot, etc. THANK YOU!!...See MoreDee-Lish Color Question
Comments (17)Had both Grand Dame and Dee-Lish. Still have Dee-Lish, actually four (4), Dee-Lish bushes, got rid of Grand Dame because of mine being chronically plagued with weak necks, which is its natural trait. In a rainy climate like mine, weak, nodding necks are a serious liability. Soggy blooms quickly rot. A bush that was relatively beautiful yesterday, looks horrible after a downpour, and it takes several days for new blooms to pop, only to be rained upon in turn....and all season long. Your Grand Dame is magnificent. Whatever you are doing, keep it up. Dee-Lish has a very upright growth habit, narrow and tall for me. Necks are pretty strong. The bloom color is pink/coral, very nice. A nice, strong, but odd scent is how I describe its fragrance, almost like an infrequently encountered tropical flowers scent. If you like Grand Dame, and I cannot see why you wouldn't, looking at your spectacular bush, give Pretty Lady Rose a try. PLR is Grand Dames' baby girl! Pretty Lady Rose holds blooms upright, and is quite fragrant and prolific of bloom. The scent is like Grand Game's to me. Moses...See MoreMoses, Pittsburgh, W. PA., zone 5/6, USA
